Old New York (1924) is a collection of four novellas, False Dawn, The Old Maid, The Spark, and New Year’s Day, exploring the rigid social codes of 19th-century New York society.
The Glimpses of the Moon
February 19, 4:00 pm ET
The Glimpses of the Moon (1922) is the story of two impoverished but socially-connected New Yorkers, who arrange a marriage of convenience as a way to sponge off their wealthy friends in lavish European settings.
Madame de Treymes & Henry James’ Madame de Mauves
March 26, 4:00 pm ET
Madame de Treymes (1907) is a novella exploring the clash between American and French cultures through the story of an American trying to win back his childhood love, who is married to a French marquis. Madame de Mauves (1874) by Henry James is the story of an American who marries a French count for love and status, only to find herself in a loveless marriage with a profligate husband who married her for her money.
