SUMMARY:Building Old New York | Anthony C. Wood\, Servant of Beauty: Landmarks\, Secret Love\, and the Unimagined Life of an Unsung New York Hero
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating series of talks delving into the history and legacy of some of New York City’s most iconic institutions\, spaces\, and landmarks. From the architecture of the Gilded Age to the preservation of historic neighborhoods in the twentieth century\, this series invites art and architectural historians to present the stories behind New York’s distinctive urban and cultural landscape\, highlighting the vision\, innovation\, and determination that built Old New York.  \nOn July 9\, Anthony C. Wood presents Servant of Beauty: Landmarks\, Secret Love\, and the Unimagined Life of an Unsung New York Hero  (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2025). This conversation with journalist and author Michelle Young delves into Wood’s recently published biography of Albert Sprague Bard (1866-1963)\, an attorney\, civic activist\, and energetic participant in urban affairs and historic preservation. Bard’s passion for protecting the beauty of the urban landscape propelled him into a David versus Goliath-like combat with Robert Moses and\, after four decades of advocacy\, paved the way for New York City’s Landmark Law of 1965—a law that protects 37\,000 buildings today. According to author Anthony Wood\, Bard is an uncelebrated Renaissance man and civic hero whose story will inspire and inform generations of citizens who continue his battle to preserve the beauty of the places they love. This conversation with architectural historian and author Michelle Young will explore Bard’s life and continued legacy—in New York City and beyond.  \nAnthony C. Wood is a nationally recognized preservationist who started as a preservation advocate in New York City and has gone on to work for\, found\, serve on the board of\, and chair preservation organizations including Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts\, the Preservation League of New York State\, and Partners for Sacred Places\, winning awards such as the 2020 New York Landmarks Conservancy Lucy G. Moses Award for Preservation Leadership. He has served on the adjunct faculty at Columbia University\, and he founded the non-profit New York Preservation Archive Project\, whose mission is to document\, preserve\, and celebrate the history of preservation in New York. Wood is also the award-winning author of Preserving New York: Winning the Right to Protect a City’s Landmark (Routledge\, 2008) and has been featured in several documentaries.  \nMichelle Young is an award-winning journalist\, author\, and professor whose writing and photography has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, The Guardian\, Hyperallergic\, The Forward\, and Narratively. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT | Building Old New York | Jonathan Conlin\, The MET: A History of a Museum and its People - Join the Waitlist!
\nOn July 16\, historian Jonathan Conlin presents The MET: A History of a Museum and its People (Columbia University Press\, 2024)\, a groundbreaking bottom-up history of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world’s greatest cultural institutions. Its holdings encompass a vast range—including paintings\, sculptures\, costumes\, instruments\, and arms and armor—and span millennia\, from ancient Egypt and Greece to Islamic art to European Old Masters and modern artists. How did the Met amass this trove\, and what do the experiences of the people who bought\, restored\, catalogued\, visited\, and watched over these works tell us about the museum? In The MET\, Jonathan Conlin tells the stories of the people who have shaped the museum—from curators and artists to museumgoers and security guards—and the communities that have made it their own. For this talk at The Mount\, Conlin will explore the foundations of the Museum\, highlighting the connections to the Jones family and the broader cultural context in which Edith Wharton came of age.  \nJonathan Conlin is Professor of Modern History at the University of Southampton. His books include Tales of Two Cities: Paris\, London\, and the Birth of the Modern City (2014) and Mr. Five Per Cent: The Many Lives of Calouste Gulbenkian\, the World’s Richest Man (2019). \nThis event is sponsored by Nedra and Richard Koplin\, who wish to thank all of those associated with The Mount as they continue to build its historic legacy. \n\nThis program has reached full capacity! \nJoin the Waitlist!\n  \n$10 – Mount Members\n$15 – General Admission\nFree for Students \nInterested in becoming a Member? SUMMARY:CANCELED | Danzy Senna in conversation with André Bernard
DESCRIPTION:Due to a family illness\, this event has been canceled. We are working with Danzy to reschedule — please join our email list to receive updates. \n\nIn its third year\, In Conversation is curated by André Bernard\, former Vice President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The series features great thinkers and influential voices whose contributions shape our culture today. Crossing the fields of politics\, journalism\, social science\, and the arts\, these conversations will explore fresh perspectives that spark curiosity and ignite new ways of thinking about the world and our most pressing challenges.   \n\nDanzy Senna\nAuthor of the bestselling novel Colored Television\nThursday\, July 17\, 5:00 pm  \n\nFunny\, piercing\, and page–turning\, Colored Television (Riverhead Books\, 2024) is the story of Jane\, a novelist in the throes of completing her second novel\, a centuries-spanning epic that her husband\, Lenny\, dubs her “mulatto War and Peace.” Jane has high hopes that this novel will turn her life around. After a lengthy\, precarious string of rentals and sublets\, she and her family are housesitting in the Hollywood Hills\, where the luxury of the gig affords the space for Jane to write\, Lenny to paint\, and their two children to attend school in one of the best LA districts. Like so many artists who have gazed longingly at Hollywood—its fame\, power\, and material comforts—things don’t go quite as planned for Jane. In this conversation\, Danzy Sena and André Bernard will discuss where the novelist in the story and real–life meet—what critic Dwight Garner likens to “the two halves of a black-and-white cookie\, which [Colored Television] adroitly crumbles.”  \nDanzy Senna is the bestselling author of six previous books\, including Caucasia (1999) and New People (2018)\, most recently Colored Television\, as well as a memoir\, Where Did You Sleep Last Night (2010). The recipient of numerous awards and honors\, she teaches writing at the University of Southern California.  \nPhoto: Dustin Snipes\n\nTICKETS ON SALE: \nBook Here!\n  \nGeneral Admission:\n$27 – Mount Members\n$32 – Non-Members \n*New* Rain or Shine Ticket:\n$37 – Mount Members\n$42 – Non-Members \nIndividual Rain or Shine Tickets guarantee admission to a program regardless of weather conditions. SUMMARY:Building Old New York | Emily Orlando & R. Tripp Evans\, The Decoration of Houses: Edith Wharton\, Ogden Codman\, Jr.\, and the Architecture of Friendship
\nWhen Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman\, Jr. published The Decoration of Houses in 1897\, both were relatively unknown in their respective fields. The decorating guidebook\, which advocated for a “simple and architectural” style\, became a foundational text for interior decoration as well as the launchpad for Wharton’s transatlantic literary acclaim. This conversation between Wharton scholar Dr. Emily Orlando and architectural historian Dr. R. Tripp Evans\, explores the history and legacy of The Decoration of Houses\, highlighting its influences on the design of The Mount and the decades-long relationship between Codman and Wharton\, a duo known socially as “Mr. and Mrs. Puss-Cod.”  \nA complimentary wine and cheese reception will follow this talk! Join us. \nDr. Emily Orlando is Professor of English and the E. Gerald Corrigan Chair in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Fairfield University. She is an internationally recognized Edith Wharton scholar and author of the award-winning book Edith Wharton and the Visual Arts. She is the co-editor (with Meredith Goldsmith) of Edith Wharton and Cosmopolitanism (2016)\, The Bloomsbury Handbook to Edith Wharton (2022)\, and the 2024 re-release of The Decoration of Houses (Syracuse University Press\, 2024) by Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman\, Jr.\, for which she also wrote a scholarly introduction. Orlando is a past president of the Edith Wharton Society\, and her public-facing scholarship has appeared in such venues as LitHub and on such podcasts as “The Gilded Gentleman.”  \nDr. R. Tripp Evans is Professor of the History of Art at Wheaton College in Norton\, Massachusetts\, where he specializes in American material culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. McNeil Fellow in American Decorative Arts. He is the author of three books\, and in 2010 received the Marfield Prize for his biography of the artist Grant Wood. His latest book\, The Importance of Being Furnished: Four Bachelors at Home (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2024)\, explores the private and professional worlds of men whose homes defined American style from the Gilded to the Jazz Ages.  \nThis event is sponsored by Nedra and Richard Koplin\, who wish to thank all of those associated with The Mount as they continue to build its historic legacy. \n\nTICKETS ON SALE MAY 12!\nNational Committee Members’ pre-sale starts April 29\nMembers’ pre-sale starts May 5\n \nBook Here!\n  \n$10 – Mount Members\n$15 – General Admission\nFree for Students \nInterested in becoming a Member? DESCRIPTION:Since 1993\, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. The eight-week series will highlight the stories of groundbreaking visionaries—scientists\, activists\, thought leaders\, and artists who have broken barriers and reshaped the world.  \nOn July 28 & 29\, author Tess Chakkalakal presents A Matter of Complexion: The Life and Fictions of Charles W. Chesnutt (St. Martin’s 2025). Charles W. Chesnutt was a force in American literature. His novels and short stories delved deeply into racial and social issues\, which were especially poignant in the American South after the Civil War. In A Matter of Complexion: The Life and Fictions of Charles W. Chesnutt\, Tess Chakkalakal gives readers the first comprehensive biography of this underappreciated literary figure—the first Black writer whose stories appeared in The Atlantic Monthly and whose books were published by Houghton Mifflin. Through his work as a writer\, critic\, and speaker\, Chesnutt broke into all-white literary establishment\, crossing racial barriers and transforming the publishing world.  \nTess Chakkalakal teaches African American and American Literature at Bowdoin College. Her writing has appeared in The New England Quarterly\, J19\, American Literary History\, and many others. SUMMARY:Summer Author Series | Tess Chakkalakal\, A Matter of Complexion: The Life and Fictions of Charles W. Chesnutt
She is the author of Novel Bondage: Slavery\, Marriage\, and Freedom in Nineteenth-Century America (Illinois UP\, 2011) and co-editor of Jim Crow\, Literature\, and the Legacy of Sutton E. Griggs (University of Georgia Press\, 2013) and Imperium in Imperio: A Critical Edition (West Virginia UP\, 2022). She is co-host and creator of the award-winning podcast Dead Writers: A Show About Great American Authors and Where They Lived. She lives in Brunswick\, Maine.  \nPhoto: Kristina O’Brien\n\n*New to 2025 – an exclusive opportunity for Mount Members!*\nThe new Rain or Shine Club Pass guarantees a seat at all eight Summer Author Series talks\, regardless of weather. SUMMARY:Building Old New York | Henry Wiencek\, Stan and Gus: Art\, Ardor\, and the Friendship that Built the Gilded Age
\nOn July 30\, historian Henry Wiencek presents Stan and Gus: Art\, Ardor\, and the Friendship that Built the Gilded Age (Farr\, Straus and Giroux\, 2025).  Stanford White was a louche man-about-town and a canny cultural entrepreneur—the creator of landmark buildings that elevated American architecture to new heights. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was the son of an immigrant shoemaker\, a moody introvert\, and a committed procrastinator whose painstaking work brought emotional depth to American sculpture. They met when Stan was walking down the street and heard Gus whistling Mozart in his studio. They pursued their own careers in Italy and France\, then came together again in New York\, where they maintained an intimate friendship and partnership that defined the art of the Gilded Age. In Stan and Gus: Art\, Ardor\, and the Friendship that Built the Gilded Age\, acclaimed historian Henry Wiencek sets the two men’s relationship within the larger story of the American Renaissance\, where millionaires’ commissions and delusions of grandeur collided with secret upper-class clubs\, new aesthetic ideas\, and two ambitious young men to yield work of lasting beauty.  \nHenry Wiencek\, a nationally prominent historian and writer\, is the author of several books\, including The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White (1999)\, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award\, and most recently\, Master of the Mountain: Thomas Jefferson and His Slaves (2012).
