SUMMARY:Summer Author Series | Dava Sobel\, The Elements of Marie Curie
DESCRIPTION:Since 1993\, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. The eight-week series will highlight the stories of groundbreaking visionaries—scientists\, activists\, thought leaders\, and artists who have broken barriers and reshaped the world.  \nOn August 4 & 5\, Pulitzer Prize finalist Dava Sobel presents The Elements of Marie Curie: How the Glow of Radium Lit a Path for Women in Science (Grove Atlantic\, 2024). “Even now\, nearly a century after her death\, Marie Curie remains the only female scientist most people can name\,” writes Dava Sobel at the opening of her shining portrait of the sole Nobel laureate decorated in two separate fields of science: Physics (1903) with her husband Pierre; and Chemistry (1911) on her own. And yet\, Sobel makes clear\, as brilliant and creative as she was in the laboratory\, Marie Curie was equally passionate outside it as a professor of physics at the Sorbonne\, mother to two daughters\, x-ray technician on the front lines of World War I\, and friend to Albert Einstein and other 20th century luminaries. Ultimately\, Curie has endured as an inspiration for generations of young women all over the world to pursue science. In The Elements of Marie Curie\, Dava Sobel has crafted a radiant biography and a masterpiece of storytelling\, illuminating the life and enduring influence of one of the most consequential figures of our time.  \nDava Sobel is the author of the international bestseller Longitude (1995)\, the bestselling Pulitzer Prize finalist Galileo’s Daughter (1999)\, The Planets (2005)\, A More Perfect Heaven (2011)\, And the Sun Stood Still (2015)\, and The Glass Universe (2016)\, and coauthor of The Illustrated Longitude (2008). She is the recipient of the Individual Public Service Award from the National Science Board\, the Bradford Washburn Award\, the Kumpke-Roberts Award from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship\, among other honors. A former New York Times science reporter\, and currently editor of the “Meter” poetry column in Scientific American.  \nThis event is dedicated in loving memory to Mount trustee Naomi Gordon (1941-2025). \nPhoto: Glen Allsop for Hodinkee\n\n*New to 2025 – an exclusive opportunity for Mount Members!*\nThe new Rain or Shine Club Pass guarantees a seat at all eight Summer Author Series talks\, regardless of weather.
