SUMMARY:Birding with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Birding at The Mount is now on Wednesdays! Join an Audubon naturalist to learn skills to find and identify migrating and resident birds during this casual\, beginner-friendly walk. This walk will focus on the basics of bird-finding and identification as well as observing the behavior of the birds we can see. We will pause and enjoy observing birds rather than focusing on maintaining an intensive list of every bird in the area. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us. \n\nMeet outside near the Ticket booth beside the Upper Lot.\nTrail distance covered during the bird walk could vary significantly depending on how many birds we see. This program typically covers up to 1.2 miles on an unsurfaced trail.\nThe trail surface is largely flat with a few gentle inclines\, but can be uneven at points or contain tripping hazards such as exposed tree roots or rocks. The trail surface could be wet or muddy depending on recent weather.\n\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website so we can maintain group sizes that are conducive to birdwatching. This program is in high demand\, so please sign up for no more than two dates at one time to ensure that many people can enjoy the experience. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Butterflies and Blooms with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:The open meadows of Edith Wharton Park\, situated near the wetlands and forests around Laurel Lake and The Mount\, are a great place to look for butterflies and other flower-loving insects. We will move slowly along the unsurfaced\, grassy loop around the park\, scanning the hillsides for butterflies or looking closely at any that land nearby. We’ll also be stopping frequently to look into flowerheads and enjoy the staggering variety of insects that rely on these small spaces. \nDuring the walk\, learn the basics of butterfly identification in the Berkshires and what you can do to help butterflies from your own backyard. \n\nThis program does not involve catching or handling butterflies or other insects. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us.\nThis program will cover up to 0.5 miles of distance.\nThe trail surface is a mowed grass path that is gradually sloping or level. The trail surface could be uneven.\n\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website. \n \nPhoto by Nick Smith-Koblitz
