SUMMARY:Birding with Mass Audubon | Fall Migration
DESCRIPTION:Migration brings a new cast of birds through The Mount’s mix of habitats\, and mornings are prime time to see and hear them. This beginner-friendly walk focuses on bird-finding tips\, simple identification cues\, and interpreting bird behavior. The grounds and trails of Edith Wharton’s original estate offer great bird watching and scenic views of meadows and ponds for us to enjoy. \nWith an experienced naturalist\, you’ll look for species arriving\, passing through\, or staying year-round\, and learn how migration works and why it matters. You’ll also take away some practical ways to support birds during this critical season. Bring your own binoculars\, or borrow a pair from us! \nThanks to The Mount’s sponsors\, this program remains free and open to the public!\nCapacity is limited—registration is required. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program is designed for adult audiences. To maintain group sizes that are conducive to birdwatching\, pre-registration is required.\nThis program meets at The Mount’s Ticket Booth. Your guide will arrive 15-minutes before the program’s start time to greet early arrivals.\nThe trail distance covered during the bird walk varies significantly week-to-week. Typically\, the walk covers up to 1.2 miles of unsurfaced trail\, largely flat with a few gentle inclines. The trail can be uneven at points\, contain tripping hazards such as exposed tree roots or rocks\, and be wet or muddy. Please be mindful of the weather and plan accordingly.\nQuestions? Join Nancy\, The Mount’s trail guide\, as she leads us In the Footsteps of Edith\, a mindful walk that will begin with reading a brief passage of Wharton’s writing—a poem\, letter\, or excerpt from a work of fiction—to enhance your connection to nature and frame an intention for the experience. Throughout the journey\, participants are welcome to share reflections.  \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nIn the Footsteps of Edith is a free program with limited capacity – registration is required.\nThis program meets at The Mount’s Ticket Booth and takes place outdoors\, rain or shine. Please plan your apparel and footwear accordingly! In the event of extreme weather conditions\, such as excessive heat or severe thunderstorms\, In the Footsteps of Edith will be postponed. Registrants will be notified of any changes by email by 8:00 am the day of the program.\nThe 1.5-mile trail walk covers a mix of woodland trails of uneven terrain\, bridges\, steps\, and gentle slopes – perfect for beginning/intermediate hikers. Surfaces may be uneven\, and participants are advised to be mindful of exposed roots and natural variations underfoot. Walking poles and closed-toed shoes are advised.\nWhile The Mount is a dog-friendly property\, dogs are not permitted in this program.\nQuestions?
