No prior writing or botanical experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to listen to the land. She has collaborated with organizations such as Project Coyote and the Jaguar Rescue Center\, and her writing has appeared in Orion\, Terrain\, Psyche/Aeon\, Yes! Magazine\, Beyond with Jane Ratcliffe\, and Psychology Today. With her partner\, she co-stewards a 270-acre forest\, actively planting native species and rewilding the land after centuries of colonial exploitation. Your naturalist will share recent research and useful resources so you can keep learning long after the walk. \nPlease note: This program does not cover foraging edible mushrooms and will take place at a location where collecting mushrooms is prohibited. However\, you will leave with a stronger appreciation and understanding of these fascinating fungi\, not to mention a few keepsake photo opportunities. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program is designed for adult audiences; pre-registration is required.\nMeet in The Mount’s Main Parking Lot near the Ticket Booth.\nDepending on where the fungi are flourishing\, this program may cover up to 1.5 miles of wide\, gently sloped trails. The Mount’s trails cover a mix of woodchip paths\, grassy areas\, and mostly level woodland trails with some gentle slopes. After practicing Tai Chi and Qi Gong for 10 years\, she earned her first Tai Chi certification in 2023. When Mary Hannah teaches Tai Chi\, she draws on her 12 years of experience as a mind-body movement instructor\, teaching yoga in studios\, wellness resorts\, public schools\, summer camps\, and leading mindful outdoor experiences. She delights in sharing the peace and vitality that come from being in nature\, and volunteers to support conservation efforts for Eastern Hemlock trees. 5% of donations to this program will go to support the New York State Hemlock Initiative

Join Nancy\, The Mount’s trail guide\, as she leads us In the Footsteps of Edith\, a mindful walk that will begin with reading a brief passage of Wharton’s writing—a poem\, letter\, or excerpt from a work of fiction—to enhance your connection to nature and frame an intention for the experience. Throughout the journey\, participants are welcome to share reflections.  \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nIn the Footsteps of Edith is a free program with limited capacity – registration is required.\nThis program meets at The Mount’s Ticket Booth and takes place outdoors\, rain or shine. Registrants will be notified of any changes by email by 8:00 am the day of the program.\nThe 1.5-mile trail walk covers a mix of woodland trails of uneven terrain\, bridges\, steps\, and gentle slopes – perfect for beginning/intermediate hikers. Surfaces may be uneven\, and participants are advised to be mindful of exposed roots and natural variations underfoot. She enjoys creating space for mindfulness\, reflection\, and deeper connections to nature. Her walks are as much about slowing down and turning in as they are about exploring a trail past and present\, offering a fun and inviting way to bring communities together\, share perspectives\, and experience the outdoors with intention in all seasons.
