SUMMARY:Evening Firefly Watch with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Learn about fireflies and how best to view or gently catch and release these mystical glowing lights of summer. After a presentation about the unique lives of these diverse insects\, we’ll take an evening walk in the meadows for firefly viewing while keeping our eyes open for the stars\, planets\, and twilight wildlife. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program is designed for adult audiences. To keep group sizes conducive to firefly catching and viewing\, pre-registration is required.\nThis program meets in The Mount’s Stable Auditorium\, a climate-controlled venue adjacent to the parking lot. Doors open 15-minutes before the program’s start time.\nDepending on where the fireflies are flashing\, this program may cover up to one mile of wide\, gently sloped trails. Some sections of the trail may have exposed tree roots or rocks. If the weather forecast or other factors affect this program\, your guide will contact you via email the day before your program with more information.\nWhile nighttime programs can be great fun\, make sure your group is prepared for mosquitoes\, which can be more active during these hours. We recommend wearing bug spray as well as long sleeves and pants. Check yourself for ticks after attending this program.\nBring a headlamp or flashlight if you need extra help seeing in the dark—ideally with a red light to avoid disturbing wildlife.\nQuestions? Vanessa will prepare a herbal tea using locally gathered plants for participants to enjoy; if possible\, please bring a mug or canteen. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program meets at The Mount’s Ticket Booth and takes place outdoors\, rain or shine. Surfaces may be uneven\, and participants are advised to be mindful of exposed roots and natural variations underfoot.\nYour guide may identify edible plants during the program; however\, participants are not permitted to eat or sample anything from The Mount’s landscape. All participants assume full responsibility for their own safety and actions\, and the guide is not liable for any ingestion or allergic reactions.\nWhile The Mount is a dog-friendly property\, dogs are not permitted in this program.\nQuestions? Email: programs@edithwharton.org; or phone: 413-551-5111 x2\n\n  \n\n  \nVanessa Chakour is an author\, herbalist\, naturalist\, USA Boxing certified coach\, and land steward whose work fosters intimacy with inner and outer wilds. Her multidisciplinary approach blends writing\, plant medicine\, movement\, and ecological restoration\, rooted in decades of study and land‑based practice across the Northeastern U.S.\, Costa Rica\, and Scotland. Her books Awakening Artemis and Earthly Bodies reflect this integration\, exploring personal and ecological healing through kinship with the more‑than‑human world. She has collaborated with organizations such as Project Coyote and the Jaguar Rescue Center\, and her writing has appeared in Orion\, Terrain\, Psyche/Aeon\, Yes! Magazine\, Beyond with Jane Ratcliffe\, and Psychology Today. With her partner\, she co-stewards a 270-acre forest\, actively planting native species and rewilding the land after centuries of colonial exploitation. DESCRIPTION:Explore the vibrant plant life of The Mount with the guidance of naturalist and author Vanessa Chakour. This guided walk along the woodland trails will highlight edible\, medicinal\, and at-risk plants—species who shape the landscape and quietly sustain us. Along the way\, participants will be prompted to deepen their connection to place through creative writing prompts\, imagining the world from the perspectives of plants as a way to see\, understand\, and relate to the natural world.   \nThis workshop blends plant knowledge\, creative inquiry\, and embodied presence. No prior writing or botanical experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to listen to the land. Please plan your apparel and footwear accordingly! In the event of extreme weather conditions\, such as excessive heat or severe thunderstorms\, Plants & Prose will be postponed to a later date. Registrants will be notified by email by 9:00 am the day of the program.\nThis trail walk covers a mix of woodchip paths\, grassy areas\, and mostly level woodland trails with some gentle slopes – perfect for beginning/intermediate hikers. SUMMARY:Twilight Bat Watch with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:As evening settles in\, bats begin their nightly flight over open meadows. This family-friendly program begins with a short\, welcoming introduction to bat natural history and common misconceptions\, then moves outdoors to watch and listen for bats during prime twilight hours. \nDepending on conditions\, your naturalist may use a bat detector to help ‘translate’ bat activity into sounds you can experience. Pre-registration is required.\nThis program meets in The Mount’s Stable Auditorium\, a climate-controlled venue adjacent to the parking lot. Some sections of the trail may have exposed tree roots or rocks. If the weather forecast or other factors affect this program\, your guide will contact you via email the day before your program with more information.\nWhile programs at dusk can be great fun\, make sure your group is prepared for mosquitoes\, which can be more active during these hours. We recommend wearing bug spray as well as long sleeves and pants. Check yourself for ticks after attending this program.\nQuestions? Email: berkshires@massaudubon.org; or phone: 413-637-0320
