Together\, they will explore the vital role of theater in showcasing immigrant experiences and their influence on shaping the United States. Highlighting the anthology’s diverse perspectives\, the discussion will examine the unique challenges various communities face in the process of assimilation\, while uncovering shared themes in the quest to become American. Through these plays\, we see powerful manifestations of struggle\, perseverance\, and resourcefulness\, especially in relation to language\, religion\, and cultural identity. These stories reveal how creativity and resilience can illuminate the complexities of identity and belonging in a changing world.  \nPublished by Restless Books\, What this Place Makes me is a collection of seven award-winning plays by rising stars of contemporary theater that herald a profound shift in what it means to be an American\, an immigrant\, and an artist on today’s stage. This trailblazing collection of works by first- and second-generation immigrants to the U.S. unites seven exhilarating new voices of Lebanese\, Nigerian\, Korean\, Bengali\, Polish\, and Mexican descent\, including Shayok Misha Chowdhury\, Hansol Jung\, Martyna Majok\, Mona Mansour\, Charlie Oh\, Mfoniso Udofia\, and jesús i. valles. Echoing beyond the stage\, their stories draw on common experiences of displacement\, alienation\, and the sense of living in suspension; sometimes torn between two worlds\, sometimesplummeting into the spaces between them. \nLive interpretation in Spanish will be provided by Language Justice Solutions for this event. \nIsaiah Stavchansky is a Mexican-American actor\, writer\, editor\, and educator. His work has been developed and performed with The Workshop Theater\, Atlantic Acting School\, The Williamstown Theatre Festival\, The Tank NYC\, and Kenyon College. He has performed at The Williamstown Theatre Festival\, Chautauqua Theater Company\, and The Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater. He is a graduate of Kenyon College and Atlantic Acting School.  \nCharlie Oh’s plays include “LONG” (Kennedy Center’s Paula Vogel Award in playwriting\, Mark Twain Prize\, Relentless Award Honors)\, “COLEMAN ’72 (world premiere South Coast Rep\, Paul Stephen Lim Playwriting Award\, Los Angeles Drama Circle Award nominee)\, “WHITE MONKEY” (Goodman New Stages\, Future Labs)\, and “THE DISRUPTORS” (Sloan Commission). Charlie is a Core Writer at the Playwrights’ Center\, and a member\, past fellow\, or alumni of Ensemble Studio Theater’s Youngblood\, Ars Nova Play Group\, Page 73’s Writers Group\, The Lark\, and the Catwalk Writer’s Residency\, among others. His work has been developed at Manhattan Theatre Club\, South Coast Rep\, The Lark\, Second Stage\, The American Musical Theatre Project\, The Goodman\, and more. He currently holds commissions from Manhattan Theater Club + the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation\, South Coast Rep\, and is developing projects for television with Amazon Studios and Universal Studios. A recent graduate of The Juilliard School’s Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program.  \nThe Literacy Network has been offering free\, one-on-one tutoring sessions for adults since 1991. LitNet’s flexible\, personalized approach to tutoring enables adult learners to succeed in their jobs\, support their families\, and engage with their local communities. The organization began by teaching reading skills\, and LitNet quickly expanded its curriculum with lessons in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)\, citizenship test preparation\, and adult basic education to better serve the large population of immigrants who live and work in the Berkshires. \n\nThe Community Voices Project fosters meaningful collaborations between The Mount and regional community partners.
