DESCRIPTION:Feel a tingle down your spine as our guides lead you through The Mount’s darkened halls\, sharing stories of the many eerie encounters that have been reported over the years. Ghost tours for families continue through Halloween! Advance registration is required. \n  \n\n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis tour is designed for kids\, ages 6-12\, accompanied by a grown-up.\nGhost Tours for Kids last approximately 75 minutes and include a half-mile walk – rain-or-shine – on a gently sloped gravel road. Terrain may be uneven\, and stairs are required to experience the full tour. Please plan your apparel and footwear accordingly! \nParking is in The Mount’s lower lot\, adjacent to the Mansion. An attendant will direct you from the Ticket Booth.\nIn the event of severe weather\, Ghost Tour for Kids may be canceled. Ticket holders will be notified of a cancellation by email by 2:00 pm the day of the tour\, and all tickets will be canceled and refunded.\nAccessible accommodations are available. DESCRIPTION:Join the Berkshire Athenaeum at The Mount for Paws & Pages\, a special program celebrating the joy of books\, reading\, and four-legged friends! Young readers are invited to practice their literacy skills by reading aloud to a therapy dog in a relaxed\, supportive environment. During 10-minute sessions\, children can choose a favorite book and share it with a patient and attentive canine listener. \nReading times are limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. We recommend arriving at the start of the program to sign up for a session! \nThere’s plenty more to explore beyond Paws & Pages. Families can follow a StoryWalk® along the grounds and create their own nature journal\, encouraging observation\, creativity\, and a closer connection to the beautiful landscape surrounding Edith Wharton’s historic home. \nThis family-friendly program brings together books\, nature\, and the companionship of therapy dogs for a memorable day of reading\, creativity\, and discovery at The Mount. \nPlease note: This event is for the registered therapy dogs below! While we love your pets\, personal pets are not permitted at this event. \nMeet the Pups!\nDaisy Deux is a medium size 6 year old Sproodle (Springer spaniel/poodle). She has been a Bright Spot certified therapy dog for 3 years now. We have worked in local schools in independent reading programs and have visited local rehab facilities upon request. Daisy has also worked with a private trainer as a neutral dog for some clients. Daisy loves people\, especially children. \nMilo is a 3 year old rescued cattle dog mix. He has been certified as a therapy dog since he was a year old. We go to nursing homes\, assisted living\, elementary school\, BCARC day program. We are certified with R. E. A. D. Which is a reading program for children. We are looking forward to the program. Kathy Korte \nNandi is a 5.5 year old English Labrador Retriever. She has been a Bright Spot Therapy dog for 2 years and has also earned her AKC Advanced Therapy dog title. We visit Phelps Cancer Center every Wednesday for visits to staff and patients and Lee Library every other Tuesday for story time. (She recently made the front page of the Eagle!) Nandi is also an accomplished Nosework Champion. \nMabel is a small dog with a BIG personality! She loves playing with her stuffed animals and even chooses one to take to bed every night. Her favorite snack is carrots\, and her favorite place to be is curled up on someone’s lap\, getting lots of pets. When she’s not snuggling\, Mabel loves keeping an eye out for squirrels and rabbits—and chasing them whenever she gets the chance! She also adores her big puppy sister\, Luna. Most of all\, Mabel loves being with people and making new friends. She can’t wait to snuggle up\, listen to some great stories\, and meet you! \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program is designed for young readers\, accompanied by their grown-ups. She delights in sharing the peace and vitality that come from being in nature\, and volunteers to support conservation efforts for Eastern Hemlock trees.

A former public radio reporter and host\, Rebecca has brought thousands of stories to life on such national programs as Morning Edition\, All Things Considered\, Here & Now\, The Splendid Table\, and Marketplace. She’s hosted several weekly news shows on public radio\, including AK (Alaska Public Media) and Metro Connection (WAMU 88.5)\, along with podcasts for the Folger Shakespeare Library and Slate Magazine. Her first book\, Onions and Garlic\, was adapted from a Circle Round episode of the same name and published by PJ Library. She’s also the author of the Circle Round picture books series\, published by Storey Publishing. Rebecca holds a B.A. from Columbia University and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa. She lives in the Berkshires with her husband\, composer Eric Shimelonis\, and their nine-year-old son.  \nEric Shimelonis is a composer\, musician\, and audio producer whose work has wowed audiences on stage\, screen\, and over the airwaves. Audiences have enjoyed his classical compositions at the Juilliard School\, the Rattlestick New Music Series\, the Kennedy Center\, and at a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall starring Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham. With more than 300 sound designs in the theater\, Eric has won a Helen Hayes Award and been nominated for Drama Desk\, Lucille Lortel\, Big Easy\, and Henry Hewes Design Awards. At Berkshire Music School\, Julia teaches a vibrant\, all-ages studio of private lessons in guitar\, bass\, and ukulele\, and leads a range of pay-what-you-wish community group classes\, including Youth Ukes! and Youth Rock Band. \nFounded in 1940\, Berkshire Music School has been serving the greater Berkshire County community for over 80 years. SUMMARY:Twilight Bat Watch with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:As evening settles in\, bats begin their nightly flight over open meadows. This family-friendly program begins with a short\, welcoming introduction to bat natural history and common misconceptions\, then moves outdoors to watch and listen for bats during prime twilight hours. \nDepending on conditions\, your naturalist may use a bat detector to help ‘translate’ bat activity into sounds you can experience. You’ll develop a new appreciation for how bats support healthy ecosystems and simple ways to help them close to home. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program is designed for families with children ages 4-17. Pre-registration is required.\nThis program meets in The Mount’s Stable Auditorium\, a climate-controlled venue adjacent to the parking lot. Doors open 15 minutes before the program’s start time.\nDepending on where the bats are flying\, this program may cover up to one mile of wide\, gently sloped trails. Some sections of the trail may have exposed tree roots or rocks. If the weather forecast or other factors affect this program\, your guide will contact you via email the day before your program with more information.\nWhile programs at dusk can be great fun\, make sure your group is prepared for mosquitoes\, which can be more active during these hours. DESCRIPTION:Experience a magical summer light show with your family and learn how best to view or gently catch and release fireflies! After a short presentation\, we’ll take an evening walk in the meadows for firefly viewing while keeping our eyes open for the stars\, planets\, and twilight wildlife. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis is a program designed for families with children ages 5-17. All registrations require at least one adult and one child. To keep group sizes conducive to firefly catching and viewing\, pre-registration is required.\nThis program meets in The Mount’s Stable Auditorium\, a climate-controlled venue adjacent to the parking lot. Doors open 15-minutes before the program’s start time.\nDepending on where the fireflies are flashing\, this program may cover up to 1 mile of wide\, gravel-paved trails that are level or gradually sloping. Some sections of the trail may have exposed tree roots or rocks. If the weather forecast or other factors affect this program\, your guide will contact you via email the day before your program with more information.\nWhile nighttime programs can be great fun\, make sure your group is prepared for mosquitoes\, which can be more active during these hours. We recommend wearing bug spray as well as long sleeves and pants. Check yourself and your children for ticks after attending this program.\nBring a headlamp or flashlight if you need extra help seeing in the dark—ideally with a red light to avoid disturbing wildlife.\nQuestions? Her Scandinavian roots are evident in her artwork\, which she describes as a “mix of classic realism and whimsy.” She is a member of the Western Massachusetts Illustrators Guild and has artwork in the permanent collection of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Astrid’s picture books include the Hector Fox and Friends series\, the Sea Dog series\, Flora and the Jazzers\, and Nic and Nellie. Several exciting new titles are in the works with Waxwing Books.
