SUMMARY:Adapting Wharton: The Operatic Reimagining of Roman Fever\, hosted by New York City's Grace Church
DESCRIPTION:In a landmark collaboration\, The Mount and Grace Church (New York City) will celebrate the life and legacy of Edith Wharton in the very place of her baptism on Easter Day in 1862. The special evening features selections from an exhilarating new operatic adaptation of Wharton’s iconic short story\, Roman Fever\, composed by Louis Karchin with a libretto by Joan Ross Sorkin. \nTransforming Wharton’s razor-sharp drama of friendship\, jealousy\, and betrayal into powerful operatic theater\, the work brings the story’s simmering tensions and dark secrets vividly to life. The event offers audiences a rare behind-the-scenes experience\, blending performance highlights with an intimate conversation moderated by Natalie Johnsonius Neubert\, President and CEO of Berkshire Opera Festival\, about the creative process of adapting literature for the stage. \nSoprano Kerrigan Bigelow will perform the role of Grace Ansley\, alongside soprano Sofia Scattarreggia as Alida Slade\, with pianist Luke Poeppel providing musical direction. The evening invites audiences to encounter Wharton’s enduring voice anew—through music\, song\, and conversation—in the city where her story began. \n\nLOCATION: \nGrace Church\n802 Broadway\nNew York\, NY 10003 \nTICKETS: \nThis event is FREE and open to the public!\nPlease REGISTER using this link. \n\nThe music of Louis Karchin (b. 1951\, Philadelphia) has been heard throughout the world and has garnered praise for its “fearless eloquence” (The New Yorker)\, “bare-nerve intensity” (NY Times)\, and “coruscating beauty” (San Francisco Chronicle). SUMMARY:Valentine's Day Forest Bathing and Tai Chi with Mary Hannah Parkman
DESCRIPTION:This Valentine’s Day\, experience the tried and true after-glow of Forest Bathing and Tai Chi at The Mount. After teaching hundreds of people\, Mary Hannah\, certified Tai Chi instructor\, noticed time and time again the qualities of ease\, peace and kindness in her students after the group sessions. Individuals remark on the beauty of nature and float off to stroll the grounds\, strangers share kind words with another\, and couples embrace.  The simplest explanation for this transformation is that the practices of Tai Chi and Forest Bathing calm the nervous system and cultivate harmony within which feels good. When we feel good\, we want to share it. We naturally care for ourselves\, our beloveds and nature. SUMMARY:Readings at Rockwell | The Jazz Age Novel: Edith Wharton's Glimpses of the Moon
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum! \n\n\n\nThe Mount is partnering with the Norman Rockwell Museum to present three staged readings in the spirit of Wharton on Wednesday. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby (1925) on the 100th anniversary of its publication; Edith Wharton’s Glimpses of the Moon (1922) chronicling the lives of American expatriates in Europe; and Nella Larsen’s Passing (1929) delving into the complexity of racial identity during the Harlem Renaissance. \n\n\n\nEach program will begin with a short talk about the author and the featured novel\, followed by a dramatic reading of select passages by an actor or actors.  \n\nABOUT THIS PROGRAM: \nGlimpses of the Moon by Edith WhartonRead by Raya MalcolmIntroduced by Sarah Margolis-Pineo \n\n\n\nTICKETS:\n$25 General admission$20 Mount Members with the code: MOUNTMEMBER2526 \nNOTE: The button below will direct you to Norman Rockwell Museum’s website.
