DESCRIPTION:On the first Tuesday of each month\, join South Berkshire Kids for a read-aloud of the monthly StoryWalk book on display at The Mount. DESCRIPTION:Stories & Stretches is an outdoor\, movement-based class designed for kids grades K-5 that blends storytelling and yoga brought to us by Kimberly Kidder\, owner of Flow on Main yoga studio. Participants will engage in coordinated movements\, playful games\, mindful meditations\, and breathing exercises. Stories & Stretches is designed to encourage physical and emotional awareness through fun and engaging experiences.  \nKimberly Kidder completed her Ashtanga vinyasa yoga teacher training in 2016 with Sacred Jade Yoga. With additional certifications in Kids Yoga and Functional Movement\, Kimberly loves working with children and adults. SUMMARY:Youth Workshop | Right Back At You: A Letter Writing Workshop with Carolyn Mackler
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 15\, 2:30 pm\nAges 8 – 12 \nBestselling author Carolyn Mackler will present her new middle grade novel\, Right Back at You (Scholastic\, 2025) and lead a workshop rooted in the themes of social connection\, community building\, and anti-bullying.  \nRight Back at You is a about two seventh-graders separated by thirty-six years who find a way to write letters to each other\, realize that they are both being bullied at school\, and form an unlikely friendship. Carolyn will lead a letter-writing workshop based on themes in Right Back at You such as forming connections despite differences and combating bullying in your community. Part of a greater program started by Carolyn called The Right Back at You Project\, the goal is to connect children across geographic divides and encourage them to find commonality. Participants are encouraged to bring the address of a friend or relative around their age who lives far away and might be interested in becoming a pen pal. We will provide paper\, pencils\, envelopes\, and stamps!  \nCarolyn Mackler is the acclaimed author of novels for adults\, teens\, and younger readers including\, The Earth\, My Butt\, and Other Big Round Things (A Michael L. Printz Honor Book)\, The Wife App\, Infinite in Between\, Not If I Can Help It\, and Best Friend Next Door. Carolyn’s most recent middle-grade novel\, Right Back at You\, comes out in March 2025. Carolyn’s award-winning books have appeared on bestseller lists and been translated into more than twenty-five languages. Guitar\, bass\, drums\, percussion\, keyboard/piano\, and voices are all welcome! Unleash your inner rockstar in this hands-on\, 90-minute intensive music workshop.  \n\nThis program takes place in the Stable Auditorium\, adjacent to the main Upper Lot and ticket booth.\nThis workshop is designed for kids ages 12-18.\nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own instruments; Berkshire Music School will provide an extra selection.\nQuestions? Julia taught elementary general music teacher\, is a bass player in college orchestras and local jazz ensembles\, and gigs as a performer as a guitarist and singer. In her role as a faculty member at Berkshire Music School\, Julia teaches a robust all-ages studio of private lessons on guitar\, bass\, and ukulele and also teaches various BMS pay-what-you-wish Community Group Classes including Youth Ukes! and Youth Rock Band. \n\n  \nThe Berkshire Music School\, founded in 1940\, has been serving the greater Berkshire County community for 85 years out of our location at 30 Wendell Ave in Pittsfield. We offer private lessons on any instrument\, Community Group Classes on a pay-what-you-wish basis\, and special programs for people of all ages\, backgrounds\, and experience levels. In her role as a faculty member at Berkshire Music School\, Julia teaches a robust all-ages studio of private lessons on guitar\, bass\, and ukulele and also teaches various BMS pay-what-you-wish Community Group Classes including Youth Ukes! and Youth Rock Band. \n\nThe Berkshire Music School\, founded in 1940\, has been serving the greater Berkshire County community for 85 years out of our location at 30 Wendell Ave in Pittsfield. Join award-winning author and illustrator Ruth Chan\, whose recently published graphic novel Uprooted (Roaring Brook Press\, 2024)\, explores Ruth’s childhood experience of being uprooted from her hometown of Toronto when her family moves to Hong Kong\, a place where her family fits in but feels nothing like home. In this workshop for middle grade students\, Ruth will illustrate the essentials of making comics and guide participants in creating characters and storyboarding their own comics. From her own experience writing Uprooted\, Ruth will offer some behind-the-scenes tips and imaginative strategies to craft a graphic novel—creative or biographical. According to Ruth\, “There will be laughing. There will creative thinking. There will be storytelling. And finally\, there will be more laughing.”  \nRuth Chan is an award-winning illustrator/author of comics and children’s books. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, NY Magazine\, Cup of Jo\, and with publishers HarperCollins\, Macmillan\, Simon & Schuster\, Disney-Hyperion\, and Abrams. Uprooted\, her middle grade graphic memoir was named Best Book of 2024 by NPR\, Publisher’s Weekly\, Kirkus\, SLJ\, and NY Magazine. Prior to illustrating full time\, she spent her teens in Hong Kong and China\, a decade working with youth and families in underserved communities. SUMMARY:Kinetic Connections - Exploring Sculpture though Movement with Louise Heit
DESCRIPTION:All Ages \nJoin us for this fun\, intergenerational dance workshop. Participants will be led through movement activities to create mini dance studies in response to several works from the 2025 Sculpture at The Mount exhibition. This workshop will deepen participants’ experience of the sculptures and the natural surrounding environment through playful movement-generating activities. We will begin with a gentle warm up\, progress to exploring the sculptures through group movement improvisations and finally putting it all together to create dances. All are welcome\, all families\, all bodies\, all abilities\, ages 5-100 years old. No dance experience necessary. \n\nThis program is for children and adults of all ages. Youth participants must be accompanied by their grownups.\nThis is an outdoor program. In the event of inclement weather\, this workshop may be rescheduled for the following Sunday\, July 27\, at 2:30pm. Registrants will be notified by email about any changes to this program.\n\n\n \nLouise Heit is a dance artist/educator/choreographer/certified movement analyst summering in the Berkshires and wintering in Brooklyn\, NY. Her choreography has been seen in NYC at Center for Performance Research\, Union Street Studio\, Lenox Hill Neighborhood House\, 92Y/Fridays at Noon\, and in London at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance. She has performed off Broadway with Adaptors Movement Theater (Bessie Award-winning)\, Pink Inc.\, and toured internationally with Marquis Studios. His dynamic\, interactive bilingual performances aim to dissolve borders and foster cross-cultural connections.  \nChilean-born vocalist Natalia Bernal hails from Iquique\, a city nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Atacama Desert. Now based in New York City\, Natalia’s rich and entrancing voice evokes the drama of the natural surroundings of her homeland. Drawing from songwriting traditions of Latin America\, her original compositions and selections from the Great American Songbook surprise with a refreshingly improvisational texture. Featuring: Natalia Bernal\, vocals; Jason Ennis\, guitar; Adam Cote\, bass. \nThe Literacy Network has been offering free\, one-on-one tutoring sessions for adults since 1991. LitNet’s flexible\, personalized approach to tutoring enables adult learners to succeed in their jobs\, support their families\, and engage with their local communities. The organization began by teaching reading skills\, and LitNet quickly expanded its curriculum with lessons in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)\, citizenship test preparation\, and adult basic education to better serve the large population of immigrants who live and work in the Berkshires. \nDrag Story Hour (DSH) started out in 2015 as drag queens reading stories to children in libraries and grew into a global phenomenon! SUMMARY:Youth Workshop | Adventures in Poetry: A Nature Writing Workshop with Margaret Young
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 17\, 2:30 pm\nAges 8 – 12\, participants must be accompanied by their grownups \nIn this Sunday afternoon workshop\, students will create poems inspired by nature. With the gardens and woods of The Mount as our classroom\, we’ll explore different poetic forms and strategies\, writing our way from soil to sky and back again. No poetry writing experience necessary; be sure to bring your imagination.  \nMargaret Young’s poetry collections include Blight Summer\, How Else Can We Know What’s Beautiful?\, and the forthcoming The Water Bear. She has taught drama\, creative writing\, and ecopoetics in settings ranging from preschools to graduate programs. Young is on the faculty of the Global Center for Advanced Studies and lives in Beverly\, Massachusetts.  \n\nThe Community Voices Project fosters meaningful collaborations between The Mount and regional community partners. Through discussions\, workshops\, readings\, and events\, the Project aims to nurture and support the development of bold\, new storytelling that strengthens diverse voices and incites cross-cultural exchange. \n \nThe Community Voices Project is supported by a grant awarded by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Arts Build Community initiative with funding from the Barr Foundation. \n\nREGISTER HERE \n  \nThere is a $5 materials fee for this workshop.\nThese are challenging times for parents. Julia taught elementary general music teacher\, is a bass player in college orchestras and local jazz ensembles\, and gigs as a performer as a guitarist and singer. In her role as a faculty member at Berkshire Music School\, Julia teaches a robust all-ages studio of private lessons on guitar\, bass\, and ukulele and also teaches various BMS pay-what-you-wish Community Group Classes including Youth Ukes! and Youth Rock Band. \n\nThe Berkshire Music School\, founded in 1940\, has been serving the greater Berkshire County community for 85 years out of our location at 30 Wendell Ave in Pittsfield. We offer private lessons on any instrument\, Community Group Classes on a pay-what-you-wish basis\, and special programs for people of all ages\, backgrounds\, and experience levels. DESCRIPTION:Due to the likelihood of rain or freezing rain on 2/18. this program has been rescheduled to tomorrow\, Thursday 2/19\, at the same time and place. Register for the new date by clicking the “Register” button below\, or by contacting the Pleasant Valley Office: (413) 637-0320 \nEven if we can’t spot them directly\, wild animals are active year-round. Play fun tracking games while looking for animal tracks\, homes\, and other signs of activity at The Mount. Learn how to piece together the clues that wildlife leaves behind to uncover their hidden world. \n\nThis is a program designed for families with children ages 6-12. Each registration requires at least one adult and one child.\nMeet near the Ticket Booth in the Upper Parking Lot of The Mount.\nPublic restrooms will not be available at this program; please plan accordingly.\nThis program covers up to 1 mile of gravel-paved or unsurfaced trails containing a mix of flat ground\, gradual slopes\, and one or two hills. The trail surface could potentially be uneven or slippery due to snow\, mud or ice.\nDress to be outside on unsurfaced trails during the forecasted weather.
