SUMMARY:Birding with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Birding at The Mount is now on Wednesdays! Join an Audubon naturalist to learn skills to find and identify migrating and resident birds during this casual\, beginner-friendly walk. This walk will focus on the basics of bird-finding and identification as well as observing the behavior of the birds we can see. We will pause and enjoy observing birds rather than focusing on maintaining an intensive list of every bird in the area. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us. \n\nMeet outside near the Ticket booth beside the Upper Lot.\nTrail distance covered during the bird walk could vary significantly depending on how many birds we see. This program typically covers up to 1.2 miles on an unsurfaced trail.\nThe trail surface is largely flat with a few gentle inclines\, but can be uneven at points or contain tripping hazards such as exposed tree roots or rocks. The trail surface could be wet or muddy depending on recent weather.\n\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website so we can maintain group sizes that are conducive to birdwatching. This program is in high demand\, so please sign up for no more than two dates at one time to ensure that many people can enjoy the experience. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Arresting Characters | A Poetry Reading featuring Michelle Blake and Karen Chase
DESCRIPTION:Though best known for her novels\, Edith Wharton was an avid poet. It was through verse that she expressed her capacity for intimacy and deep introspection\, revealing an emotional complexity not always visible in her prose. Scholar Irene Goldman-Price points to Wharton’s Arresting Characters—the protagonists of her narrative poems—as gateways into the psychological depths of a character’s interior world. \nThis poetry reading is an ode to Wharton’s Arresting Characters. Following a brief reading of “Artemis to Actaeon” (1902) performed by Mary Anne Grammer\, two contemporary poets will read from newly published works. Michelle Blake will read from How We Enter The Palace (2025) and Karen Chase will read a selection from ZundelState (2025). Like Wharton\, Blake and Chase are enthralled with the past\, exploring various historical\, biblical\, and mythological figures as a way to better understand the present and speculate on the future.  \n\nMichelle Blake wrote a trilogy of mysteries\, with Lily Connor\, and her chapbook\, Into the Wide and Startling World\, was selected for the New Women’s Voices Series at Finishing Line Press. In 2014\, she published a collaboration with visual artist Fran Forman\, in which she wrote a series of poems and a fable. She has published poems and essays in MORE Magazine\, The New York Times\, Ploughshares\, Southern Review\, Banyan Press Anthology\, Cedar Creek Review\, Prairie Schooner\, Solstice Lit Journal\, Cider Press Review\, Tupelo Quarterly\, Asheville Poetry Review\, and many other magazines and anthologies.  \nPhoto: Karen Becker\n\ \nKaren Chase’s poems\, stories and essays have appeared in The New Yorker\, The New Republic\, The Gettysburg Review and Southwest Review\, among others. Her poems have been anthologized in The Norton Introduction to Poetry\, Andrei Codrescu’s An Exquisite Corpse Reader\, and Billy Collins’ Poetry 180. Two Tales: Jamali Kamali and ZundelState is her eighth book. Chase and her husband\, the painter Paul Graubard\, live in Western Massachusetts.  \nPhoto: Paul Graubard\n  \n\nTICKETS: \n$10 – Mount Members\n$15 – General Admission\nFree for Students\n \nBook Here!\n  \nInterested in becoming a Member? SUMMARY:SOLD OUT | Adam Gopnik in conversation with André Bernard - Join the Waitlist!
DESCRIPTION:In its third year\, In Conversation brings together seasoned interviewer André Bernard\, former Vice President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, with innovative thinkers and influential voices whose contributions shape our culture today. Crossing the fields of politics\, journalism\, social science\, and the arts\, these conversations will explore fresh perspectives that spark curiosity and ignite new ways of thinking about the world.   \n\nAdam Gopnik\nStaff Writer of The New Yorker and author of All That Happiness Is\nThursday\, June 26\, 5:00 pm \n\nSince 1986\, Adam Gopnik’s fiction\, criticism\, book reviews\, essays\, and foreign correspondence have helped define the voice of The New Yorker. He is also the author of numerous books\, most recently All That Happiness Is (W.W. Norton\, 2024)\, a slim volume exploring society’s obsession with achievement. Crossing generations\, the pressure to achieve has wide–sweeping effects\, from students being tested to get into the best schools to adults seeking the highest-paying\, most prestigious jobs. Gopnik likens achievement to being ensnared by a maze with no way out. His solution: choose accomplishment over achievement. Accomplishments are the result of activities pursued for their own sake. In All That Happiness Is\, Gopnik draws on the stories of artists\, philosophers\, scientists\, and his own fumbling attempts to play the guitar to explore the ways that self-directed passions—or accomplishments—lead to a sense of fulfillment and\, ultimately\, happiness.  \nAdam Gopnik has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1986. During his tenure\, he has written fiction\, humor\, criticism\, book reviews\, personal essays\, Profiles\, and reported pieces from abroad. He was the magazine’s art critic from 1987 to 1995 and the Paris correspondent from 1995 to 2000. From 2000 to 2005\, he wrote a journal about New York life\, and since then has been the magazine’s chief critic-at-large. His books\, ranging from essay collections about Paris and food to children’s novels\, include Paris to the Moon (2000)\, The King in the Window (2005)\, Through the Children’s Gate: A Home in New York (2006)\, Angels and Ages: A Short Book About Darwin\, Lincoln\, and Modern Life (2009)\, The Table Comes First: Family\, France\, and the Meaning of Food (2011)\, Winter: Five Windows on the Season (2011)\, At the Strangers’ Gate: Arrivals in New York (2017)\, A Thousand Small Sanities: The Moral Adventure of Liberalism (2019)\, The Real Work: On the Mystery of Mastery (2023)\, and most recently All That Happiness Is (2024). Gopnik has been the recipient of numerous awards \, including the Legion d’honneur from the French Republic and election to the American Academy of Arts & Letters. In 2017\, his musical\, Our Table\, opened at the Long Wharf Theatre (New Haven)\, and his first one-man storytelling show\, The Gates\, played at the Public Theatre (New York). A new one\, “Adam Gopnik’s New York\,” opens at Lincoln Center in May 2025. \nPhoto: Brigitte Lacombe\n\nThis event has reached full capacity!
