SUMMARY:SOLD OUT | Adam Gopnik in conversation with André Bernard - Join the Waitlist!
DESCRIPTION:In its third year\, In Conversation brings together seasoned interviewer André Bernard\, former Vice President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, with innovative thinkers and influential voices whose contributions shape our culture today. Crossing the fields of politics\, journalism\, social science\, and the arts\, these conversations will explore fresh perspectives that spark curiosity and ignite new ways of thinking about the world.   \n\nAdam Gopnik\nStaff Writer of The New Yorker and author of All That Happiness Is\nThursday\, June 26\, 5:00 pm \n\nSince 1986\, Adam Gopnik’s fiction\, criticism\, book reviews\, essays\, and foreign correspondence have helped define the voice of The New Yorker. He is also the author of numerous books\, most recently All That Happiness Is (W.W. Norton\, 2024)\, a slim volume exploring society’s obsession with achievement. Crossing generations\, the pressure to achieve has wide–sweeping effects\, from students being tested to get into the best schools to adults seeking the highest-paying\, most prestigious jobs. Gopnik likens achievement to being ensnared by a maze with no way out. His solution: choose accomplishment over achievement. Accomplishments are the result of activities pursued for their own sake. In All That Happiness Is\, Gopnik draws on the stories of artists\, philosophers\, scientists\, and his own fumbling attempts to play the guitar to explore the ways that self-directed passions—or accomplishments—lead to a sense of fulfillment and\, ultimately\, happiness.  \nAdam Gopnik has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1986. During his tenure\, he has written fiction\, humor\, criticism\, book reviews\, personal essays\, Profiles\, and reported pieces from abroad. He was the magazine’s art critic from 1987 to 1995 and the Paris correspondent from 1995 to 2000. From 2000 to 2005\, he wrote a journal about New York life\, and since then has been the magazine’s chief critic-at-large. His books\, ranging from essay collections about Paris and food to children’s novels\, include Paris to the Moon (2000)\, The King in the Window (2005)\, Through the Children’s Gate: A Home in New York (2006)\, Angels and Ages: A Short Book About Darwin\, Lincoln\, and Modern Life (2009)\, The Table Comes First: Family\, France\, and the Meaning of Food (2011)\, Winter: Five Windows on the Season (2011)\, At the Strangers’ Gate: Arrivals in New York (2017)\, A Thousand Small Sanities: The Moral Adventure of Liberalism (2019)\, The Real Work: On the Mystery of Mastery (2023)\, and most recently All That Happiness Is (2024). Gopnik has been the recipient of numerous awards \, including the Legion d’honneur from the French Republic and election to the American Academy of Arts & Letters. In 2017\, his musical\, Our Table\, opened at the Long Wharf Theatre (New Haven)\, and his first one-man storytelling show\, The Gates\, played at the Public Theatre (New York). A new one\, “Adam Gopnik’s New York\,” opens at Lincoln Center in May 2025. \nPhoto: Brigitte Lacombe\n\nThis event has reached full capacity! SUMMARY:Summer Author Series | Michelle Young\, The Art Spy
DESCRIPTION:Since 1993\, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. SUMMARY:Summer Author Series | Michelle Young\, The Art Spy
DESCRIPTION:Since 1993\, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. The eight-week series will highlight the stories of groundbreaking visionaries—scientists\, activists\, thought leaders\, and artists who have broken barriers and reshaped the world.  \nOn July 7 & 8\, author Michelle Young presents The Art Spy: The Extraordinary Untold Tale of WWII Resistance Hero Rose Valland (Harper Collins\, 2025). Based on troves of previously undiscovered documents\, The Art Spy chronicles the brave actions of Rose Valland\, a key Resistance spy embedded within the Nazi’s Parisian art looting headquarters. A veritable female Monuments Man\, Valland has\, until now\, been written out of the annals\, despite bearing witness to the largest art theft in history. The Art Spy is a riveting and stylish saga that moves from the glittering days of pre-War Paris when the city was home to geniuses of modern culture—Picasso\, Josephine Baker\, Coco Chanel\, Le Corbusier\, and Frida Kahlo—through the tension-riddled cities and resorts of Europe on the eve of war\, to the harrowing years of the Nazi occupation of France. Author Michelle Young uncovers how an unlikely heroine infiltrated Nazi leadership\, risking everything\, to save the cultural legacy of the West.  \nFor this Tuesday presentation\, Michelle will be joined on stage by Sara Houghteling\, for a conversation about The Art Spy — the process of research and writing the text\, as well as the continued relevance of Rose Valland’s story today. \nMichelle Young is an award-winning journalist\, author\, and professor whose writing and photography has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, The Guardian\, Hyperallergic\, The Forward\, and Narratively. SUMMARY:Building Old New York | Anthony C. Wood\, Servant of Beauty: Landmarks\, Secret Love\, and the Unimagined Life of an Unsung New York Hero
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating series of talks delving into the history and legacy of some of New York City’s most iconic institutions\, spaces\, and landmarks. From the architecture of the Gilded Age to the preservation of historic neighborhoods in the twentieth century\, this series invites art and architectural historians to present the stories behind New York’s distinctive urban and cultural landscape\, highlighting the vision\, innovation\, and determination that built Old New York.  \nOn July 9\, Anthony C. Wood presents Servant of Beauty: Landmarks\, Secret Love\, and the Unimagined Life of an Unsung New York Hero  (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2025). This conversation with journalist and author Michelle Young delves into Wood’s recently published biography of Albert Sprague Bard (1866-1963)\, an attorney\, civic activist\, and energetic participant in urban affairs and historic preservation. Bard’s passion for protecting the beauty of the urban landscape propelled him into a David versus Goliath-like combat with Robert Moses and\, after four decades of advocacy\, paved the way for New York City’s Landmark Law of 1965—a law that protects 37\,000 buildings today. According to author Anthony Wood\, Bard is an uncelebrated Renaissance man and civic hero whose story will inspire and inform generations of citizens who continue his battle to preserve the beauty of the places they love. This conversation with architectural historian and author Michelle Young will explore Bard’s life and continued legacy—in New York City and beyond.  \nAnthony C. Wood is a nationally recognized preservationist who started as a preservation advocate in New York City and has gone on to work for\, found\, serve on the board of\, and chair preservation organizations including Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts\, the Preservation League of New York State\, and Partners for Sacred Places\, winning awards such as the 2020 New York Landmarks Conservancy Lucy G. Moses Award for Preservation Leadership. He has served on the adjunct faculty at Columbia University\, and he founded the non-profit New York Preservation Archive Project\, whose mission is to document\, preserve\, and celebrate the history of preservation in New York. Wood is also the award-winning author of Preserving New York: Winning the Right to Protect a City’s Landmark (Routledge\, 2008) and has been featured in several documentaries.  \nMichelle Young is an award-winning journalist\, author\, and professor whose writing and photography has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, The Guardian\, Hyperallergic\, The Forward\, and Narratively. In this workshop for middle grade students\, Ruth will illustrate the essentials of making comics and guide participants in creating characters and storyboarding their own comics. From her own experience writing Uprooted\, Ruth will offer some behind-the-scenes tips and imaginative strategies to craft a graphic novel—creative or biographical. And finally\, there will be more laughing.”  \nRuth Chan is an award-winning illustrator/author of comics and children’s books.
