DESCRIPTION:Ease into the afternoon with Forest Bathing and Tai Chi among the evergreen forests at The Mount. Mary Hannah will guide you in easy-to-follow Tai Chi movements to cultivate peace and vitality\, and a walking meditation to experience “the art of connecting with nature through our senses\,” according to Dr. Qing Lin\, Chairman of the Japanese Society for Forest Medicine.\n\nBy being in rhythm with nature\, we awaken not only our senses but also wonder\, inspiration\, and our innate capacity for healing. Nature offers us soothing sounds\, stable ground\, and blooms with expressions of harmony that guide us home to experience these qualities within ourselves.\n\n\n  \n\n  \n\nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nPre-registration for this event is encouraged; there is a suggested donation of $20/per person.\nThis program meets at The Mount’s Ticket Booth and takes place outdoors\, rain or shine. Please plan your apparel and footwear accordingly—wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement. In the event of rain\, this program will be abbreviated to one hour. In the event of extreme weather conditions\, such as excessive heat or severe thunderstorms\, this program will be canceled. Registrants will be notified by email by 12:00 pm the day of the program.\nThere is a short trail walk of 0.5 miles at the start of this program. The Mount’s trails cover a mix of woodchip paths\, grassy areas\, and mostly level woodland trails with some gentle slopes. When Mary Hannah teaches Tai Chi\, she draws on her 12 years of experience as a mind-body movement instructor\, teaching yoga in studios\, wellness resorts\, public schools\, summer camps\, and leading mindful outdoor experiences. She delights in sharing the peace and vitality that come from being in nature\, and volunteers to support conservation efforts for Eastern Hemlock trees. 5% of donations to this program will go to support the New York State Hemlock Initiative

DESCRIPTION:Feel a tingle down your spine as our guides lead you through The Mount’s darkened halls\, sharing stories of the many eerie encounters that have been reported over the years. Ghost tours start in July and continue through Halloween! Advance registration is required. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nGhost Tours of The Mount last approximately two hours and include a half-mile walk – rain-or-shine – on a gently sloped gravel road. Terrain may be uneven\, and stairs are required to experience the full tour. Her essays have appeared in The Atlantic\, the Paris Review\, The New York Times\, and The Washington Post. She is also a frequent commentator for New England Public Radio and has been featured on CNN\, National Public Radio\, and the BBC. Martha is the recipient of fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Her books include: Ain’t Nobody’s Fool: The Life and Times of Dolly Parton; The Mercury 13: The True Story of Thirteen Women and the Dream of Space Flight; Curveball: The Remarkable Story of Toni Stone\, the First Woman to Play Professional Baseball in the Negro League; and These Fevered Days: Ten Pivotal Moments in the Making of Emily Dickinson.  \nDavid W. Blight is Sterling Professor of History and Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery\, Resistance\, and Abolition at Yale University. He previously taught at North Central College in Illinois\, Harvard University\, and Amherst College. He is the author or editor of a dozen books\, including Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom; American Oracle: The Civil War in the Civil Rights Era; Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory; and annotated editions of Douglass’s first two autobiographies. He has worked on Douglass much of his professional life\, and been awarded the Pulitzer Prize\, the Bancroft Prize\, the Abraham Lincoln Prize\, and the Frederick Douglass Prize\, among others.  \nDavid Conrad-Pérez is a historian and former journalist whose work examines the forces that shape the media\, philanthropy\, and public life. He serves as research director for the Center for Media & Social Impact at American University. He is a former producer for New York Public Radio’s On the Media and Public Radio International’s The World. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication. Fire in the Heart of the City is his first book. \nHolly Jackson is a professor of English and the chair of the American Studies department at UMass Boston. She is the author of two books\, most recently American Radicals: How 19th-Century Protest Shaped the Nation. Her essays have appeared in popular venues such as the New York Times and the Washington Post\, as well as in a range of scholarly journals. Jackson is an elected member of the American Antiquarian Society\, an Honorary Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society\, and the Bernard Bailyn Editor of The New England Quarterly. \nGish Jen is the author of six novels\, two books of stories\, and two works of nonfiction. Her honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, and the Fulbright Foundation\, as well as the Lannan Literary Award for Fiction and the Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her stories have been chosen for The Best American Short Stories five times\, including The Best American Short Stories of the Century. Bad Bad Girl\, her latest novel\, was named the best-reviewed work of fiction in 2025 by Lit Hub and is a finalist for the 2026 Dayton Literary Peace Prize. \nMaris Kreizman is an essayist and columnist for Literary Hub whose work has appeared in the New York Times\, New York Magazine\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Los Angeles Times\, Vanity Fair\, and Esquire. She hosted The Maris Review\, an intimate author interview podcast\, from 2018 to 2023. A former board member of the National Book Critics Circle\, she has served as a judge for the annual NBCC Awards as well as for the NYPL Young Lions Fiction Award. She is the creator of Slaughterhouse 90210\, a blog and book that celebrate the intersection of literature and pop culture. She was previously the editorial director of Book of the Month\, the editorial director of digital content at barnesandnoble.com\, and a publishing outreach lead at Kickstarter. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and her books. \nMary Rasenberger is the CEO of the Authors Guild and Authors Guild Foundation. Prior to joining the Guild in November 2014\, Mary practiced law for over 25 years in roles that spanned private practice\, the government\, and the corporate sector\, as a recognized expert in copyright and media law.  \nJia Tolentino is a staff writer at The New Yorker\, the author of the essay collection Trick Mirror\, and a screenwriter. Formerly\, she was the deputy editor at Jezebel and a contributing editor at the Hairpin. She grew up in Texas\, received her undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia\, and got her MFA in fiction from the University of Michigan. In 2020\, she received a Whiting Award as well as the Jeannette Haien Ballard Prize. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times Magazine and Pitchfork\, among other places. She lives in Brooklyn.  \nNancy Wolff is a partner at the intellectual property\, media and entertainment law firm of Cowan\, DeBaets\, Abrahams & Sheppard\, LLP located in New York\, NY\, and Beverly Hills\, CA.  She represents a wide range of creative individuals and companies in all areas of digital media\, art law\, licensing\, and publishing and serves as counsel to the Digital Media Licensing Association. Nancy is co-chair of the firm’s Litigation Department and co-chair of the firm’s Art Law Group based on her deep knowledge of copyright\, defamation\, and other third-party rights.  \nMichelle Young is an award-winning journalist and author. An artistic\, poetic young man confronts the seemingly prosaic businessman who raised him as a son with evidence that his actual father is a famous violinist. This gently sardonic tale plays with rumors of Wharton’s own illegitimacy. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis one-hour reading takes place on The Mount’s Terrace under an open-air shade tent. Please be mindful of the weather and plan accordingly! The Terrace is located on the second floor of the Mansion. An elevator is available to assist those with mobility concerns.\nPlease park in the Upper Parking Lot. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to allow time to enjoy the quarter-mile walk down the driveway to the Mansion. Additionally\, Ryan has performed there in many plays not by Shakespeare\, which include Hound of the Baskervilles\, Creditors\, The Learned Ladies\, and Mother Courage.  Regional credits include: Great Barrington Public Theater: The Stones\, Breakwater; WAM Theatre: ROE\, The Old Mezzo; Theater at Woodshill: Hamlet; Gloucester Stage: Mr. Fullerton: Between the Sheets; Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse: Visitors; Commonwealth Stage Company: The Winter’s Tale\, Universe Rushing Apart; the Huntington Theatre Company: Joy and Pandemic. Film/television credits include The Boston Strangler (Hulu) and Time Traveling Bong (Comedy Central). He has also released numerous recordings\, both as a solo artist and as part of the folk duo Oakes and Smith. He has written three books\, The Ghostly Tales of the Berkshires (2023)\, Ghosts of Northwestern New Jersey (2022)\, and Ghosts of the Berkshires (2020)\, all published by Arcadia Publishing. He has also released numerous recordings\, both as a solo artist and as part of the folk duo Oakes and Smith. Since 2010\, Robert has led immersive ghost storytelling experiences at historic locations in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts\, including Ventfort Hall\, Edith Wharton’s The Mount\, and Herman Melville’s Arrowhead. He has also given talks and readings for both children and adults at many libraries\, schools\, and cultural centers. Robert has appeared on Syfy’s Ghost Hunters\, Jeff Belanger’s New England Legends series on PBS\, and The Apple Seed show on BYUradio and has been featured in The Boston Globe\, The Berkshire Eagle\, and numerous other media outlets. DESCRIPTION:Join us this Veterans Day for a dramatic reading of Edith Wharton’s newly published wartime story\, The Men Who Saved the World\, discovered in the archives of Yale’s Beinecke Library.  \nPerformed by acclaimed actor Anne Undeland\, the reading brings to life a remarkable work of fiction appearing in print for the first time this year. Following the performance\, Berkshire County’s Trek Track Collective string quartet will perform music written during the Great War.  \nSet in the summer of 1918\, The Men Who Saved the World unfolds inside a French château just a few miles from the front. The dining room has been restored to its prewar elegance—a tablescape of orchids\, candlelight\, and fine dinnerware—though earlier in the war\, an army surgeon amputated limbs on that very table. Outside\, artillery fire and falling bombs punctuate the night. Inside\, the guests carry on the rituals of polite society.  \nWharton’s wartime fiction was deeply informed by her own extraordinary humanitarian work in France. Many readers are unaware that\, during World War I\, she founded and administered three organizations that collectively provided aid to some 10\,000 displaced people over five years. She also organized the shipment of blankets\, clothing\, and other essential supplies to soldiers at the front.  \nFrom the Drawing Room of The Mount\, this special Veterans Day program will highlight Wharton’s humanitarian efforts to contextualize the dramatic reading of The Men Who Saved the World\, performed by Anne Undeland. To conclude\, Trek Track Collective string quartet will play music written during the time of the Great War\, bringing the era vividly to life through stories and strings.  \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\n\n\nThis event takes place in The Mount’s Drawing Room\, which is located on the second floor of the Mansion. DESCRIPTION:Join us this Veterans Day for a dramatic reading of Edith Wharton’s newly published wartime story\, The Men Who Saved the World\, discovered in the archives of Yale’s Beinecke Library.  \nPerformed by acclaimed actor Anne Undeland\, the reading brings to life a remarkable work of fiction appearing in print for the first time this year. Following the performance\, Berkshire County’s Trek Track string quartet will perform music written during the Great War.  \nSet in the summer of 1918\, The Men Who Saved the World unfolds inside a French château just a few miles from the front. The dining room has been restored to its prewar elegance—a tablescape of orchids\, candlelight\, and fine dinnerware—though earlier in the war\, an army surgeon amputated limbs on that very table. Outside\, artillery fire and falling bombs punctuate the night. Inside\, the guests carry on the rituals of polite society.  \nWharton’s wartime fiction was deeply informed by her own extraordinary humanitarian work in France. Many readers are unaware that\, during World War I\, she founded and administered three organizations that collectively provided aid to some 10\,000 displaced people over five years. She also organized the shipment of blankets\, clothing\, and other essential supplies to soldiers at the front.  \nFrom the Drawing Room of The Mount\, this special Veterans Day program will highlight Wharton’s humanitarian efforts to contextualize the dramatic reading of The Men Who Saved the World\, performed by Anne Undeland. To conclude\, Trek Track Collective string quartet will play music written during the time of the Great War\, bringing the era vividly to life through stories and strings.  \nVeterans are invited to attend this program for free. Nature offers us soothing sounds\, stable ground\, and blooms with expressions of harmony that guide us home to experience these qualities within ourselves.\n\n\n  \n\n  \n\nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nPre-registration for this event is encouraged; there is a suggested donation of $20/per person.\nThis program meets at The Mount’s Ticket Booth and takes place outdoors\, rain or shine. Please plan your apparel and footwear accordingly—wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement. In the event of rain\, this program will be abbreviated to one hour. In the event of extreme weather conditions\, such as excessive heat or severe thunderstorms\, this program will be canceled.
