SUMMARY:Building Old New York | Henry Wiencek\, Stan and Gus: Art\, Ardor\, and the Friendship that Built the Gilded Age
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating series of talks delving into the history and legacy of some of New York City’s most iconic institutions\, spaces\, and landmarks. From the architecture of the Gilded Age to the preservation of historic neighborhoods in the twentieth century\, this series invites art and architectural historians to present the stories behind New York’s distinctive urban and cultural landscape\, highlighting the vision\, innovation\, and determination that built Old New York.  \nOn July 30\, historian Henry Wiencek presents Stan and Gus: Art\, Ardor\, and the Friendship that Built the Gilded Age (Farr\, Straus and Giroux\, 2025).  Stanford White was a louche man-about-town and a canny cultural entrepreneur—the creator of landmark buildings that elevated American architecture to new heights. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was the son of an immigrant shoemaker\, a moody introvert\, and a committed procrastinator whose painstaking work brought emotional depth to American sculpture. They met when Stan was walking down the street and heard Gus whistling Mozart in his studio. They pursued their own careers in Italy and France\, then came together again in New York\, where they maintained an intimate friendship and partnership that defined the art of the Gilded Age. In Stan and Gus: Art\, Ardor\, and the Friendship that Built the Gilded Age\, acclaimed historian Henry Wiencek sets the two men’s relationship within the larger story of the American Renaissance\, where millionaires’ commissions and delusions of grandeur collided with secret upper-class clubs\, new aesthetic ideas\, and two ambitious young men to yield work of lasting beauty.  \nHenry Wiencek\, a nationally prominent historian and writer\, is the author of several books\, including The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White (1999)\, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award\, and most recently\, Master of the Mountain: Thomas Jefferson and His Slaves (2012). \nThis event is sponsored by Nedra and Richard Koplin\, who wish to thank all of those associated with The Mount as they continue to build its historic legacy. \n\nTICKETS ON SALE MAY 12!\nNational Committee Members’ pre-sale starts April 29\nMembers’ pre-sale starts May 5\n \nBook Here!\n  \n$10 – Mount Members\n$15 – General Admission\nFree for Students \nInterested in becoming a Member? SUMMARY:Justice Stephen Breyer in conversation with André Bernard - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:We have an exciting announcement! Given the overwhelming response to this In Conversation event with Justice Stephen Breyer\, we are partnering with Lenox Schools to move the program to the Lenox Memorial Middle & High School Duffin Theater\, 197 East Street\, Lenox\, MA. This means the event will go on — in air conditioning! — regardless of weather conditions. Information about the Duffin can be found here. \n\nIn its third year\, In Conversation brings together seasoned interviewer André Bernard\, former Vice President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, with innovative thinkers and influential voices whose contributions shape our culture today. Crossing the fields of politics\, journalism\, social science\, and the arts\, these conversations will explore fresh perspectives that spark curiosity and ignite new ways of thinking about the world.   \n\n\nJustice Stephen Breyer\nRetired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and author of Reading the Constitution: Why I Chose Pragmatism\, Not Textualism\nFriday\, August 1\, 5:00 pm\nDoors open at 4:15 pm\nDuffin Theater | 197 East Street  Lenox\, MA \n\nIn August\, we welcome Justice Stephen Breyer to The Mount. Justice Breyer is retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States\, where he served for 28 years—from his appointment in 1994 by President Clinton until his retirement in 2022. In response to the rise of textualism\, a judicial philosophy encouraging the interpretation of language as it was understood at the time documents were written\, Justice Breyer published Reading the Constitution: Why I Chose Pragmatism\, Not Textualism (2024)\, a book that looks back on the judicial precedent of Chief Justice John Marshal\, who established that the Constitution must be a workable set of principles open to interpretation by subsequent generations. Most important in interpreting law\, states Breyer\, is to understand the statutes as well as the consequences of deciding a case one way or another.   \nThe Honorable Stephen Breyer is a retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Born in San Francisco in 1938\, he is a graduate of Stanford\, Oxford\, and Harvard Law School. He has taught law for many years as a professor at Harvard Law School and at the Kennedy School of Government. He has also worked as a Supreme Court law clerk (for Justice Arthur Goldberg)\, a Justice Department lawyer (antitrust division)\, an Assistant Watergate Special Prosecutor\, and Chief Counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In 1980\, he was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit by President Carter\, becoming Chief Judge in 1990. In 1994\, he was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Clinton. He has written books and articles about a range of legal topics\, including administrative law\, economic regulation\, and the U.S. Constitution. His books include Active Liberty (2005)\, Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View (2010)\, The Court and the World (2015)\, The Authority of the Court and the Peril of Politics (2021)\, and Reading the Constitution: Why I Chose Pragmatism\, Not Textualism (2024). His wife\, Joanna\, was born in Great Britain and is a retired clinical psychologist. They have three children—Chloe\, Nell\, and Michael—and seven grandchildren.  \nPhoto: The Collection of the Supreme Court of the United States\n\nThis program has reached full capacity!\nTickets are no longer available.\n \nPlease note: tickets will not be available the day of the event at the door. Thank you for your understanding and support! \n\n\nThis one-hour talk takes place at Lenox Memorial Middle & High School Duffin Theater\, 197 East Street\, Lenox\, MA.\n\nDoors will open at 4:15 pm.\n\n\nParking at the Duffin Theater will be coordinated by the Lenox Police Department. Parking will be limited! If you are joining friends for this event\, please consider carpooling to ease the stress on the parking lot. The Lenox PD will ensure that all emergency and fire lanes are kept clear. In the event that parked vehicles infringe on public safety\, the driver will be asked to move their vehicle. If the vehicle’s owner cannot be found\, the vehicle may be towed. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!\n\n\nAccessible parking spaces will also be limited — please consider arriving early to ensure availability of a handicapped space. We will have a designated passenger drop-off zone in front of the Theater.\n\nSeating for all programs at The Mount is first come\, first served. If you have seating preferences\, we recommend arriving fifteen minutes early.\nPlease Note: Justice Breyer will not answer questions regarding the current political climate and cases that are pending or likely to come before the Supreme Court. Please focus your questions on his book Reading the Constitution and other judicial matters.\nA book signing will follow this talk. SUMMARY:What This Place Makes Me | Live Storytelling Event presented by LitNet
DESCRIPTION:The Literacy Network (LitNet) presents a live storytelling event inspired by the theme What This Place Makes Me. Throughout the summer\, the storytellers — all of whom are immigrants working on their English with LitNet — will be coached by Sheela Clary through a series of storytelling workshops. In this culminating event\, each storyteller will take the stage for 5-8 minutes to perform their What This Place Makes Me inspired story.  \nA reception will follow this event! Please join us. \nWhat this Place Makes Me (Restless Books\, 2025) is a collection of seven award-winning plays by rising stars of contemporary theater that herald a profound shift in what it means to be an American\, an immigrant\, and an artist on today’s stage. This trailblazing collection edited by Isaiah Stavchansky includes works by first- and second-generation immigrants to the US\, uniting seven exhilarating new voices of Lebanese\, Nigerian\, Korean\, Bengali\, Polish\, and Mexican descent: Shayok Misha Chowdhury\, Hansol Jung\, Martyna Majok\, Mona Mansour\, Charlie Oh\, Mfoniso Udofia\, and jesús i. valles. Echoing beyond the stage\, their stories draw on common experiences of displacement\, alienation\, and the sense of living in suspension; sometimes torn between two worlds\, sometimes plummeting into the spaces between them.  \nSheela Clary\, story coach for this project\, is a freelance writer and Italian and storytelling teacher\, born and raised in South Berkshire County. She’s a Moth Story Slam winner and Grand Slam participant and organizes storytelling events locally. Her essays\, journalism and humor pieces can be found regularly in the Berkshire Edge and on her newsletter\, Clarity. She lives with her family in West Stockbridge and enjoys hiking\, traveling and cold water plunging. \nThe Literacy Network has been offering free\, one-on-one tutoring sessions for adults since 1991. LitNet’s flexible\, personalized approach to tutoring enables adult learners to succeed in their jobs\, support their families\, and engage with their local communities. The organization began by teaching reading skills\, and LitNet quickly expanded its curriculum with lessons in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)\, citizenship test preparation\, and adult basic education to better serve the large population of immigrants who live and work in the Berkshires. \n\nThe Community Voices Project fosters meaningful collaborations between The Mount and regional community partners. Through discussions\, workshops\, readings\, and events\, the Project aims to nurture and support the development of bold\, new storytelling that strengthens diverse voices and incites cross-cultural exchange. \n \nThe Community Voices Project is supported by a grant awarded by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Arts Build Community initiative with funding from the Barr Foundation. \n\nThis event is FREE and open to the public!\nSeating is limited\, registration is recommended: \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nInterested in becoming a Mount Member? SUMMARY:Summer Author Series | Dava Sobel\, The Elements of Marie Curie
DESCRIPTION:Since 1993\, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. The eight-week series will highlight the stories of groundbreaking visionaries—scientists\, activists\, thought leaders\, and artists who have broken barriers and reshaped the world.  \nOn August 4 & 5\, Pulitzer Prize finalist Dava Sobel presents The Elements of Marie Curie: How the Glow of Radium Lit a Path for Women in Science (Grove Atlantic\, 2024). “Even now\, nearly a century after her death\, Marie Curie remains the only female scientist most people can name\,” writes Dava Sobel at the opening of her shining portrait of the sole Nobel laureate decorated in two separate fields of science: Physics (1903) with her husband Pierre; and Chemistry (1911) on her own. And yet\, Sobel makes clear\, as brilliant and creative as she was in the laboratory\, Marie Curie was equally passionate outside it as a professor of physics at the Sorbonne\, mother to two daughters\, x-ray technician on the front lines of World War I\, and friend to Albert Einstein and other 20th century luminaries. Ultimately\, Curie has endured as an inspiration for generations of young women all over the world to pursue science. In The Elements of Marie Curie\, Dava Sobel has crafted a radiant biography and a masterpiece of storytelling\, illuminating the life and enduring influence of one of the most consequential figures of our time.  \nDava Sobel is the author of the international bestseller Longitude (1995)\, the bestselling Pulitzer Prize finalist Galileo’s Daughter (1999)\, The Planets (2005)\, A More Perfect Heaven (2011)\, And the Sun Stood Still (2015)\, and The Glass Universe (2016)\, and coauthor of The Illustrated Longitude (2008). She is the recipient of the Individual Public Service Award from the National Science Board\, the Bradford Washburn Award\, the Kumpke-Roberts Award from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship\, among other honors. A former New York Times science reporter\, and currently editor of the “Meter” poetry column in Scientific American.  \nThis event is dedicated in loving memory to Mount trustee Naomi Gordon (1941-2025). \nPhoto: Glen Allsop for Hodinkee\n\n*New to 2025 – an exclusive opportunity for Mount Members!*\nThe new Rain or Shine Club Pass guarantees a seat at all eight Summer Author Series talks\, regardless of weather.
