SUMMARY:The Jazz Barn: Making Music History in the Berkshires with John Gennari and Ron Ramsay's Berkshire Salon Series
DESCRIPTION:In 1950\, Philip and Stephanie Barber opened the Music Inn\, a groundbreaking home for jazz and blues nestled among the barns and outbuildings of the Wheatleigh estate. This unlikely venue drew legendary Black jazz performers—John Lewis\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Max Roach\, Oscar Peterson\, Kenny Dorham\, and others—many of whom also served as faculty-in-residence at the Lenox School of Jazz\, a vital center of the genre’s avant-garde.   \nIn The Jazz Barn\, author John Gennari writes that the Barbers’ vision “became pivotal to public understanding of the music’s African roots\, its folk properties\, and its place in American life and culture.” This special event combines an author talk with a performance by Ron Ramsay’s Berkshire Salon Series\, exploring the history and enduring legacy of the Music Inn and Lenox School of Jazz\, and the profound influence of Philip and Stephanie Barber on the cultural life of the Berkshires—and beyond. Gennari’s previous book\, Flavor and Soul: Italian America at Its African American Edge (2017)\, is a study of Black/Italian cultural intersections in music and vernacular soundscapes\, foodways\, sports\, and other forms of expressive culture. His earlier book\, Blowin’ Hot and Cool: Jazz and Its Critics (2006)\, won the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for Excellence in Music Criticism and the John G. Cawelti Award for Best Book in American Culture Studies.  \nRon Ramsay & Samantha Talora  have been blending their voices in harmony since 2014\, bringing an exhilarating vocal tour de force to audiences throughout the northeast. Launched in 2025\, Ron Ramsay’s Berkshire Music Salon Series is an ongoing series dedicated to and inspired by Ron’s lifelong friend and mentor\, the late great Berkshire socialite\, singer\, and entrepreneur Stephanie Barber\, founder of The Music Inn and owner of the Gilded Age cottage\, Wheatleigh. Together\, Ron and Stephanie performed and sang the great songs of the American Songbook\, French and German cabaret\, and the music of their many famous composer friends throughout Berkshire County. Ron dedicates this series to the memory of Stephanie Barber\, his esteemed and wonderful friend.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the ancient Chinese\, mind-body practice of Qigong\, meaning “mastery of your life-force energy.” Qigong\, a simpler form of Tai Chi\, combines gentle movements that mimic nature\, self-applied massage\, breathwork\, and meditation with the goal of improving and maintaining physical and emotional health. This self-care practice has been found to relieve stress and anxiety\, calm the mind\, and may help reduce pain\, improve mobility\, balance\, posture\, strength\, immunity\, and sleep. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nBeginners are welcome! Pre-registration for this event is encouraged. After he tracked down its illustrator\, the French artist Yoran Cazac\, he went on to coedit an acclaimed new edition of the book in 2018. His writing has also been anthologized in The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin\, James Baldwin Now\, and Speculative Light: The Arts of Beauford Delaney and James Baldwin. He is the recipient of a 2023 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the Beinecke Library and Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale\, the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program\, and the National Humanities Center\, as well as residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell. He received his BA in English from Yale\, his MFA in creative writing from American University\, and his PhD in English from Columbia. Born and raised in Washington\, DC\, he lives in Brooklyn\, New York.

After he tracked down its illustrator\, the French artist Yoran Cazac\, he went on to coedit an acclaimed new edition of the book in 2018. His writing has also been anthologized in The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin\, James Baldwin Now\, and Speculative Light: The Arts of Beauford Delaney and James Baldwin. He is the recipient of a 2023 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the Beinecke Library and Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale\, the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program\, and the National Humanities Center\, as well as residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell. He received his BA in English from Yale\, his MFA in creative writing from American University\, and his PhD in English from Columbia. DESCRIPTION:As evening settles in\, bats begin their nightly flight over open meadows. This family-friendly program begins with a short\, welcoming introduction to bat natural history and common misconceptions\, then moves outdoors to watch and listen for bats during prime twilight hours. \nDepending on conditions\, your naturalist may use a bat detector to help ‘translate’ bat activity into sounds you can experience. You’ll develop a new appreciation for how bats support healthy ecosystems and simple ways to help them close to home. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program is designed for families with children ages 4-17. Pre-registration is required.\nThis program meets in The Mount’s Stable Auditorium\, a climate-controlled venue adjacent to the parking lot. Wright is the author of eleven nonfiction books\, most notably The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 (2006)\, which won the Pulitzer Prize\, and Going Clear (2013)\, a bestselling investigation of Scientology adapted into an Emmy-winning HBO documentary. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the ancient Chinese\, mind-body practice of Qigong\, meaning “mastery of your life-force energy.” Qigong\, a simpler form of Tai Chi\, combines gentle movements that mimic nature\, self-applied massage\, breathwork\, and meditation with the goal of improving and maintaining physical and emotional health. This self-care practice has been found to relieve stress and anxiety\, calm the mind\, and may help reduce pain\, improve mobility\, balance\, posture\, strength\, immunity\, and sleep. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nBeginners are welcome! Pre-registration for this event is encouraged. Many of the grand Eastern hemlock and Eastern white pines on the estate grew under the appreciation of Edith. You’ll learn practical insight into forest health that deepens your sense of stewardship\, leaving you refreshed\, grounded\, and inspired to care for these legacy trees that care for us.  \nMary Hannah Parkman is a certified Tai Chi Instructor and Yoga Teacher. She was drawn to Tai Chi by the nature-inspired movements and the dance between grace and strength. After practicing Tai Chi and Qi Gong for 10 years\, she earned her first Tai Chi certification in 2023. When Mary Hannah teaches Tai Chi\, she draws on her 12 years of experience as a mind-body movement instructor\, teaching yoga in studios\, wellness resorts\, public schools\, summer camps\, and leading mindful outdoor experiences. Our annual music series returns with Sounds of Summer\, featuring an exciting lineup of live performances curated by jazz musician Michael Junkins. Bring a blanket\, stretch out on the lawn\, and enjoy a picnic—or grab a bite from the food truck in the Forecourt. Signature cocktails and refreshing drinks will be available at the Bar at the Terrace Café. Join us for an easygoing evening of music with friends!  \nIn August\, GATO6 returns to The Mount! Led by composer George Oldziey\, GATO 6 is Austin’s premier Latin Jazz band. This high-powered\, all-star ensemble performs Oldziey’s original music\, which draws on his myriad world music and jazz influences. The band features locally\, nationally\, and internationally renowned artists. For this performance\, GATO 6 is joined by Lenox’s own Suzi Stern\, renowned jazz vocalist\, lyricist\, composer\, and educator.   \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nSounds of Summer performances take place on The Mount’s Terrace under an open-air shade tent. Speakers are set up on the lawn so guests can also enjoy the music throughout the grounds and gardens. Please check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.\nIn the event of extreme weather—such as excessive heat or severe thunderstorms—performances will be cancelled. This webpage and The Mount’s homepage will be updated at 2:00 pm on the day of the concert if a cancellation is necessary.\nSeating on the Terrace is first-come\, first-served! Please consider bringing a blanket and/or chairs to enjoy the show from the lawn. Accessible seating is available! Our parking lot has been redesigned and recently reopened to the public\, so we ask for your patience as our parking attendants help you park safely. We recommend arriving fifteen minutes early to allow time to enjoy the quarter-mile walk down the driveway to the Mansion. If you require assistance to the concert location\, a golf cart shuttle will be running throughout the afternoon and evening. Pick-up and drop-off points will be clearly marked\, and seating is available while you wait.\nA Kid Zone with lawn games\, crafts\, and other fun activities will be set up on the lawn near the French Garden. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome!\nThe Bar at the Terrace Café will be open at 5:00 pm! The Notorious B.I.T.E. and Flavorful Bites food trucks will begin serving at 5:30 pm. Please note: The Mount’s alcohol license does not permit outside beverages to be brought in. Help maintain our status with the Mass ABCC by patronizing The Mount’s Terrace Bar!

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing & Tai Chi with Mary Hannah Parkman
DESCRIPTION:Ease into the afternoon with Forest Bathing and Tai Chi among the evergreen forests at The Mount. Mary Hannah will guide you in easy-to-follow Tai Chi movements to cultivate peace and vitality\, and a walking meditation to experience “the art of connecting with nature through our senses\,” according to Dr. Qing Lin\, Chairman of the Japanese Society for Forest Medicine.\n\nBy being in rhythm with nature\, we awaken not only our senses but also wonder\, inspiration\, and our innate capacity for healing. Nature offers us soothing sounds\, stable ground\, and blooms with expressions of harmony that guide us home to experience these qualities within ourselves.\n\n\n  \n\n  \n\nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nPre-registration for this event is encouraged; there is a suggested donation of $20/per person.\nThis program meets at The Mount’s Ticket Booth and takes place outdoors\, rain or shine. Please plan your apparel and footwear accordingly—wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement. In the event of rain\, this program will be abbreviated to one hour. In the event of extreme weather conditions\, such as excessive heat or severe thunderstorms\, this program will be canceled. Registrants will be notified by email by 12:00 pm the day of the program.\nThere is a short trail walk of 0.5 miles at the start of this program. The Mount’s trails cover a mix of woodchip paths\, grassy areas\, and mostly level woodland trails with some gentle slopes. Surfaces may be uneven\, and participants are advised to be mindful of exposed roots and natural variations underfoot.\nWhile The Mount is a dog-friendly property\, dogs are not permitted in this program.\nQuestions? After practicing Tai Chi and Qi Gong for 10 years\, she earned her first Tai Chi certification in 2023. When Mary Hannah teaches Tai Chi\, she draws on her 12 years of experience as a mind-body movement instructor\, teaching yoga in studios\, wellness resorts\, public schools\, summer camps\, and leading mindful outdoor experiences. She delights in sharing the peace and vitality that come from being in nature\, and volunteers to support conservation efforts for Eastern Hemlock trees. 5% of donations to this program will go to support the New York State Hemlock Initiative

DESCRIPTION:Feel a tingle down your spine as our guides lead you through The Mount’s darkened halls\, sharing stories of the many eerie encounters that have been reported over the years. Ghost tours start in July and continue through Halloween! Advance registration is required. \n  \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nGhost Tours of The Mount last approximately two hours and include a half-mile walk – rain-or-shine – on a gently sloped gravel road. Terrain may be uneven\, and stairs are required to experience the full tour. Please plan your apparel and footwear accordingly!\nParking for Ghost Tours is in The Mount’s lower lot\, adjacent to the Mansion. An attendant will direct you from the Ticket Booth.\nThis tour contains adult content that is not appropriate for young audiences under 12 years old. Families should consider attending one of our Ghost Tours for Kids.\nIn the event of severe weather\, Ghost Tours may be canceled. DESCRIPTION:Join Rebecca Sheir\, former host of Circle Round\, for an exciting reading of The Tale of the Unwelcome Guest and The Lion’s Whisker\, two colorfully illustrated picture books adapted from folktales told on the award-winning public radio podcast. Each book will be accompanied by live music played by composer Eric Shimelonis. The reading will be followed by a book signing and craft activity. \nIMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION: \n\nThis program is designed for elementary-aged youth accompanied by their grown-ups. A former public radio reporter and host\, Rebecca has brought thousands of stories to life on such national programs as Morning Edition\, All Things Considered\, Here & Now\, The Splendid Table\, and Marketplace. She’s hosted several weekly news shows on public radio\, including AK (Alaska Public Media) and Metro Connection (WAMU 88.5)\, along with podcasts for the Folger Shakespeare Library and Slate Magazine. Her first book\, Onions and Garlic\, was adapted from a Circle Round episode of the same name and published by PJ Library. She’s also the author of the Circle Round picture books series\, published by Storey Publishing. Rebecca holds a B.A. from Columbia University and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa. She lives in the Berkshires with her husband\, composer Eric Shimelonis\, and their nine-year-old son.  \nEric Shimelonis is a composer\, musician\, and audio producer whose work has wowed audiences on stage\, screen\, and over the airwaves. Audiences have enjoyed his classical compositions at the Juilliard School\, the Rattlestick New Music Series\, the Kennedy Center\, and at a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall starring Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham. With more than 300 sound designs in the theater\, Eric has won a Helen Hayes Award and been nominated for Drama Desk\, Lucille Lortel\, Big Easy\, and Henry Hewes Design Awards. Film highlights include the features International Falls and Winter Passing\, for which he performed a duet with Will Ferrell. To date\, he has contributed nearly 300 original scores\, using hundreds of different world instruments\, to Circle Round\, the internationally-acclaimed folktales podcast he co-produced with his wife\, Rebecca Sheir.  \nRebecca and Eric’s forthcoming show\, Lions and Legends\, will feature imaginative retellings of legends\, myths\, folktales\, and fables\, serving as a magical\, timeless resource for teaching values\, nurturing empathy\, and offering hope\, wisdom\, and comfort in today’s chaotic world.
