DESCRIPTION:Cancelled Oct. 13 Due to Weather \nEnjoy the ancient Chinese\, mind-body practice of Qigong\, meaning “mastery of your life-force energy.” Qigong\, a simpler form of Tai Chi\, combines gentle movements that mimic nature\, self-applied massage\, breathwork\, and meditation with the goal of improving and maintaining physical and emotional health. This self-care practice has been found to relieve stress and anxiety\, calm the mind\, and may help reduce pain\, improve mobility\, balance\, posture\, strength\, immunity and sleep.  \nTo register for this class\, email Jamie: greene01238@gmail.com \n\nThis program takes place beside the French Flower Garden or at the Dell behind the Stable. Check in with the Ticket booth to confirm the location for each class.\nWear comfortable shoes or bring a mat and practice barefoot. Each mindful walk will begin with reading a brief passage of Wharton’s writing—a poem\, letter\, or excerpt from a work of fiction—to enhance your connection to nature and frame an intention for the experience. At the conclusion of the journey\, participants are welcome to share reflections.  \nNancy Seguin is a lifelong volunteer and passionate explorer of nature\, history\, and cultural venues. An experienced Hiking Guide\, she enjoys creating fun and mindful learning experiences while bringing communities together in a scenic setting.   Nancy is a member of various local outdoor recreation and conservation organizations appreciating an active lifestyle of walking/hiking\, biking\, and qigong with others of shared interest.  Previously\, she was a Trail Steward for North County Land Trust and led group hikes for Berkshire Camino.  She’s hoping to meet you on the trails soon!  \n\nThis is a free program but capacity is limited! Look and listen for bats – the only flying mammals – and other nocturnal wildlife as you explore the forests\, meadows and wetlands of Edith Wharton’s historic Berkshires estate. If conditions allow\, we’ll try out a special bat-detecting tool. \n\nThis program is suitable for all ages.\nMeet in the parking lot of The Mount near the Ticket Booth.\nThis program covers up to 1.2 miles of unsurfaced trail. The trail surface might be uneven or contain exposed tree roots and rocks\, making it unsuitable for strollers. Recent weather might make the trail surface wet\, muddy\, or slippery.\nBring a headlamp or flashlight — ideally one with a red mode to avoid disturbing wildlife — if you’d like more visibility in the dark.\nNo public restrooms are available at The Mount at this time of year\, so plan your trip accordingly.\nYour guide will email you about 24 hours in advance of your program with any updates about your program\, such as trail conditions.\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website.\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:SOLD OUT | Among the Primeval Shadows: Exploring the Strange Magic of Edith Wharton’s Ghost Stories with Robert Oakes
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Halloween for a ghostly talk and tour of The Mount with author Robert Oakes! \nAfter reading her first ghost story\, Edith Wharton was plunged into “a world haunted by formless horrors\,” and felt that a “dark undefinable menace forever dogging [her] steps\, lurking and threatening.” Some mysterious magic contained in this particular kind of tale\, when mingled with Wharton’s own “intense Celtic sense of the supernatural\,” seemed to produce such a fearful effect on the young author that\, for years after reading her first ghostly tale\, she “could not sleep in the room with a book containing a ghost story” and “had to burn books of this kind\, because it frightened [her] to know that they were downstairs in the library!”  \nAnd yet\, amazingly\, Wharton went on to write ghost stories of her own. Indeed\, she became a master of the form\, taking her place among the great ghost story writers who inspired her\, like Sheridan Le Fanu\, Marion Crawford\, and Fitz-James O’Brien. As Wharton wrote her ghostly tales\, she thought about what made these stories work\, how it was that they could affect us so deeply as to send “a cold shiver down one’s spine…” \nThough we know it’s just a story\, right? \nJoin Robert Oakes\, author of Ghosts of the Berkshires and long-time ghost tour guide at The Mount\, as he explores Wharton’s ideas on ghosts and ghost stories and shares excerpts from her tales that reveal some of their mysterious magic. Following the talk in The Mount’s Drawing Room\, we’ll bring the tales to life as we explore the Main House by flashlight and hear reports of hauntings at the estate. Wharton invited her readers to meet her “halfway among the primeval shadows.” In this program\, we’ll look into the darkness and see what we may see! \n \nRobert Oakes writes books about ghosts\, leads tours in haunted places\, and sings soulful original songs. He has written three books\, The Ghostly Tales of the Berkshires (2023)\, Ghosts of Northwestern New Jersey (2022)\, and Ghosts of the Berkshires (2020)\, all published by Arcadia Publishing. He has also released numerous recordings\, both as a solo artist and as part of the folk duo Oakes and Smith. Since 2010\, Robert has led immersive ghost storytelling experiences at historic locations in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts\, including Ventfort Hall\, Edith Wharton’s The Mount\, and Herman Melville’s Arrowhead. He has also given talks and readings for both children and adults at many libraries\, schools\, and cultural centers. Robert has appeared on Syfy’s Ghost Hunters\, Jeff Belanger’s New England Legends series on PBS\, and The Apple Seed show on BYUradio and has been featured in The Boston Globe\, The Berkshire Eagle\, and numerous other media outlets. Learn about the fascinating history of the Berkshires as you explore the past\, present and future of the beautiful trees on the property. \n\nMeet in the parking lot of The Mount near the Ticket Booth.\nThis program covers up to 1.2 miles of unsurfaced trail. The trail surface might be uneven or contain exposed tree roots and rocks. Recent weather might make the trail surface wet\, muddy\, or slippery.\nBring binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us. At the conclusion of the journey\, participants are welcome to share reflections.  \nNancy Seguin is a lifelong volunteer and passionate explorer of nature\, history\, and cultural venues. An experienced Hiking Guide\, she enjoys creating fun and mindful learning experiences while bringing communities together in a scenic setting.   Nancy is a member of various local outdoor recreation and conservation organizations appreciating an active lifestyle of walking/hiking\, biking\, and qigong with others of shared interest.  Previously\, she was a Trail Steward for North County Land Trust and led group hikes for Berkshire Camino.  She’s hoping to meet you on the trails soon!  \n\nThis is a free program but capacity is limited! This exciting series\, Readings at Rockwell | The Jazz Age Novel\, was organized in tandem with Jazz Age Illustration\, a major exhibition exploring the art of popular illustration of the 1920s and 1930s. The Jazz Age Novel series will explore the work of three authors who critically examine the enormous cultural shifts that took place in America in the 1920s\, including: F. Her edition of Fitzgerald’s previously unpublished short stories I’d Die for You and Other Lost Stories was published by Scribner in 2017; and her second edition of Tales of the Jazz Age for Oxford/World’s Classics in 2023. and the Norton Library edition of The Great Gatsby (2022). She is currently at work\, with Jackson L. Byer\, on an edition of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald’s selected letters; and on a book of essays about Bob Dylan. This year she served as conference director of The F. Scott Fitzgerald Society’s 17th international conference which celebrated the centennial year of the publication of The Great Gatsby.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Embark on a reflective journey through the woods\, meadows\, and grounds of Edith Wharton’s estate. Join Nancy\, an experienced trail guide\, as she leads us In the Footsteps of Edith. Each mindful walk will begin with reading a brief passage of Wharton’s writing—a poem\, letter\, or excerpt from a work of fiction—to enhance your connection to nature and frame an intention for the experience. At the conclusion of the journey\, participants are welcome to share reflections.  \nNancy Seguin is a lifelong volunteer and passionate explorer of nature\, history\, and cultural venues. An experienced Hiking Guide\, she enjoys creating fun and mindful learning experiences while bringing communities together in a scenic setting.   Nancy is a member of various local outdoor recreation and conservation organizations appreciating an active lifestyle of walking/hiking\, biking\, and qigong with others of shared interest.  Previously\, she was a Trail Steward for North County Land Trust and led group hikes for Berkshire Camino.  She’s hoping to meet you on the trails soon!  \n\nThis is a free program but capacity is limited! Join today.\n\n– This 90-minute hike takes place rain-or-shine on the trails of The Mount and adjacent properties. Please plan accordingly! We recommend bringing water\, sunscreen\, a hat\, and insect repellent.\n– Terrain is comprised of level and gently sloping trail — perfect for beginning/intermediate hikers. Participants are advised to be mindful of roots and uneven ground. Closed toed shoes are recommended!\n– In the event of severe weather\, the hike may be postponed to the following Wednesday.
