DESCRIPTION:Join us this Halloween for a ghostly talk and tour of The Mount with author Robert Oakes! \nAfter reading her first ghost story\, Edith Wharton was plunged into “a world haunted by formless horrors\,” and felt that a “dark undefinable menace forever dogging [her] steps\, lurking and threatening.” Some mysterious magic contained in this particular kind of tale\, when mingled with Wharton’s own “intense Celtic sense of the supernatural\,” seemed to produce such a fearful effect on the young author that\, for years after reading her first ghostly tale\, she “could not sleep in the room with a book containing a ghost story” and “had to burn books of this kind\, because it frightened [her] to know that they were downstairs in the library!”  \nAnd yet\, amazingly\, Wharton went on to write ghost stories of her own. Indeed\, she became a master of the form\, taking her place among the great ghost story writers who inspired her\, like Sheridan Le Fanu\, Marion Crawford\, and Fitz-James O’Brien. As Wharton wrote her ghostly tales\, she thought about what made these stories work\, how it was that they could affect us so deeply as to send “a cold shiver down one’s spine…” \nThough we know it’s just a story\, right? \nJoin Robert Oakes\, author of Ghosts of the Berkshires and long-time ghost tour guide at The Mount\, as he explores Wharton’s ideas on ghosts and ghost stories and shares excerpts from her tales that reveal some of their mysterious magic. Following the talk in The Mount’s Drawing Room\, we’ll bring the tales to life as we explore the Main House by flashlight and hear reports of hauntings at the estate. Wharton invited her readers to meet her “halfway among the primeval shadows.” In this program\, we’ll look into the darkness and see what we may see! \n \nRobert Oakes writes books about ghosts\, leads tours in haunted places\, and sings soulful original songs. He has written three books\, The Ghostly Tales of the Berkshires (2023)\, Ghosts of Northwestern New Jersey (2022)\, and Ghosts of the Berkshires (2020)\, all published by Arcadia Publishing. He has also released numerous recordings\, both as a solo artist and as part of the folk duo Oakes and Smith. Since 2010\, Robert has led immersive ghost storytelling experiences at historic locations in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts\, including Ventfort Hall\, Edith Wharton’s The Mount\, and Herman Melville’s Arrowhead. He has also given talks and readings for both children and adults at many libraries\, schools\, and cultural centers. Robert has appeared on Syfy’s Ghost Hunters\, Jeff Belanger’s New England Legends series on PBS\, and The Apple Seed show on BYUradio and has been featured in The Boston Globe\, The Berkshire Eagle\, and numerous other media outlets. Learn about the fascinating history of the Berkshires as you explore the past\, present and future of the beautiful trees on the property. \n\nMeet in the parking lot of The Mount near the Ticket Booth.\nThis program covers up to 1.2 miles of unsurfaced trail. The trail surface might be uneven or contain exposed tree roots and rocks. Recent weather might make the trail surface wet\, muddy\, or slippery.\nBring binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us. Each mindful walk will begin with reading a brief passage of Wharton’s writing—a poem\, letter\, or excerpt from a work of fiction—to enhance your connection to nature and frame an intention for the experience. At the conclusion of the journey\, participants are welcome to share reflections.  \nNancy Seguin is a lifelong volunteer and passionate explorer of nature\, history\, and cultural venues. An experienced Hiking Guide\, she enjoys creating fun and mindful learning experiences while bringing communities together in a scenic setting.   Nancy is a member of various local outdoor recreation and conservation organizations appreciating an active lifestyle of walking/hiking\, biking\, and qigong with others of shared interest.  Previously\, she was a Trail Steward for North County Land Trust and led group hikes for Berkshire Camino.  She’s hoping to meet you on the trails soon!  \n\nThis is a free program but capacity is limited! DESCRIPTION:A collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum! \n\n\n\nThe Mount is partnering with the Norman Rockwell Museum to present three staged readings in the spirit of Wharton on Wednesday. This exciting series\, Readings at Rockwell | The Jazz Age Novel\, was organized in tandem with Jazz Age Illustration\, a major exhibition exploring the art of popular illustration of the 1920s and 1930s. The Jazz Age Novel series will explore the work of three authors who critically examine the enormous cultural shifts that took place in America in the 1920s\, including: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby (1925) on the 100th anniversary of its publication; Edith Wharton’s Glimpses of the Moon (1922) chronicling the lives of American expatriates in Europe; and Nella Larsen’s Passing (1929) delving into the complexity of racial identity during the Harlem Renaissance. \n\n\n\nEach program will begin with a short talk about the author and the featured novel\, followed by a dramatic reading of select passages by an actor or actors.  \n\nABOUT THIS PROGRAM: \nThe Great Gatsby\, by F. He has been company member of Shakespeare & Company since 2006 and while there has performed in Shakespeare’s plays The Taming of the Shrew\, Antony and Cleopatra\, As You Like It\, Henry V\, Julius Caesar\, Love’s Labour’s Lost\, Macbeth\, Merry Wives of Windsor\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, Othello\, Richard III\, The Tempest\, Twelfth Night\, Two Gentlemen of Verona\, and The Winter’s Tale. DESCRIPTION:Dive into the fascinating world of wildlife tracking with a beginner-friendly walk through fields and forests. Search for tracks\, scat\, and signs of the delicate but exciting interactions between predators and their prey. With any luck\, we will find signs of coyotes\, foxes\, deer\, rabbits\, and more. \n\nMeet in the parking lot of The Mount near the Ticket Booth.\nThis program covers up to one mile of trail depending on the amount of tracks we find. Terrain is level or gradually sloping. The trail surface could potentially be uneven or slippery due to snow\, mud or ice. Traction spikes or snowshoes may be available to borrow on a first-come\, first-served basis.\nDress for the weather and enjoy a morning of winter tracking.\nNo public restrooms are available at The Mount at this time of year\, so plan your trip accordingly.\nYour guide will email you about 24 hours in advance of your program with any updates about your program\, such as trail conditions.\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website.\n\nQuestions? This exciting series\, Readings at Rockwell | The Jazz Age Novel\, was organized in tandem with Jazz Age Illustration\, a major exhibition exploring the art of popular illustration of the 1920s and 1930s. The Jazz Age Novel series will explore the work of three authors who critically examine the enormous cultural shifts that took place in America in the 1920s\, including: F. DESCRIPTION:This Valentine’s Day\, experience the tried and true after-glow of Forest Bathing and Tai Chi at The Mount. After teaching hundreds of people\, Mary Hannah\, certified Tai Chi instructor\, noticed time and time again the qualities of ease\, peace and kindness in her students after the group sessions. Individuals remark on the beauty of nature and float off to stroll the grounds\, strangers share kind words with another\, and couples embrace.  The simplest explanation for this transformation is that the practices of Tai Chi and Forest Bathing calm the nervous system and cultivate harmony within which feels good. When we feel good\, we want to share it. We naturally care for ourselves\, our beloveds and nature. When Mary Hannah teaches Tai Chi\, she draws on over a decade of experience as a mind-body movement instructor\, teaching yoga in studios\, wellness resorts\, public schools\, summer camps and leading mindful outdoor experiences. She delights in sharing the peace\, vitality and inspiration that comes from being in nature through her teaching and artwork. Mary Hannah also volunteers to support conservation efforts for Eastern Hemlock trees.
