SUMMARY:Summer Author Series | Elyse Graham\, Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II
DESCRIPTION:Since 1993\, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. The eight-week series will highlight the stories of groundbreaking visionaries—scientists\, activists\, thought leaders\, and artists who have broken barriers and reshaped the world.  \nOn August 25 & 26\, author Elyse Graham presents Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II (Harper Collins\, 2024). At the start of WWII\, the U.S. found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency\, and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—a precursor to today’s CIA—was quickly formed. To fill its ranks with experts\, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly\, literature professors\, librarians\, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work. Drawing on personal histories\, letters\, and declassified OSS files\, historian Elyse Graham tells the story of this small group of academics-turned-OSS spies who invented modern spycraft\, and helped turn the tide of World War II. Book and Dagger is thrillingly paced and rigorously researched—an inspiring and gripping true story revealing the indelible power of the humanities to change the world.  \nElyse Graham is a historian and professor at Stony Brook University\, a flagship university in the SUNY system. She holds degrees from Princeton\, Yale\, and MIT\, and has learned how scholars whisper\, scheme\, launder information\, and guard secrets. She is the author of three academic books: You Talkin’ to Me? (2020)\, A Unified Theory of Cats on the Internet (2020)\, and The Republic of Games (2018).  \n\n*New to 2025 – an exclusive opportunity for Mount Members!*\nThe new Rain or Shine Club Pass guarantees a seat at all eight Summer Author Series talks\, regardless of weather. SUMMARY:The Amy Clampitt Fund presents Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Join us to experience the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Phillips\, who will read from his latest poetry collection\, Scattered Snows\, to the North (Farrar\, Straus and Giroux\, 2024)\, a collection about distortion and revelation\, about knowing and the unreliability of a knowing that’s based on human memory. \nThis reading is presented by the Amy Clampitt Fund\, a Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation\, that seeks to advance poetry and the literary arts. Poet Ama Codjoe will provide an introduction.  \n\nCarl Phillips’s latest book of poems is Scattered Snows\, to the North (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, 2024). His Then the War: And Selected Poems 2007-2020 (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, 2022) won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize. Other honors include the Jackson Poetry Prize\, the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award\, the Los Angeles Times Book Award\, the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry\, and awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the Academy of American Poets\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the Library of Congress. Phillips has also written three prose books\, most recently My Trade Is Mystery: Seven Meditations from a Life in Writing (Yale University Press\, 2022). He lives on Cape Cod\, in Massachusetts.  \nPhoto: Reston Allen\nAmy Clampitt\, born in New Providence\, Iowa\, emerged as one of America’s most celebrated poets later in life\, following careers in publishing and environmental work. Educated at Grinnell College\, Columbia University\, and the New School\, she turned seriously to poetry in the 1960s\, achieving widespread acclaim with the publication of The Kingfisher in 1983. Her richly textured\, allusion-laden verse—praised for its baroque vocabulary\, intricate syntax\, and sensuous imagery—drew comparisons to literary giants like Emily Dickinson\, Wallace Stevens\, and Marianne Moore. Critics highlighted her virtuoso command of language and her ability to weave metaphor with musicality and wit. Clampitt’s notable collections include What the Light Was Like (1985)\, Archaic Figure (1987)\, and A Silence Opens (1994). A recipient of prestigious fellowships and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, she also taught at institutions such as Amherst and Smith Colleges. She died in Lenox\, Massachusetts\, in 1994\, leaving behind a body of work both intellectually dazzling and emotionally resonant. \n\nTickets to this event are free\, registration is required! \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nInterested in becoming a Mount Member? SUMMARY:Fall Birding with Mass Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Birding at The Mount is now on Wednesdays! Join an Audubon naturalist to learn skills to find and identify migrating and resident birds during this casual\, beginner-friendly walk. This walk will focus on the basics of bird-finding and identification as well as observing the behavior of the birds we can see. We will pause and enjoy observing birds rather than focusing on maintaining an intensive list of every bird in the area. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us. \n\nMeet outside near the visitor information booth in the main parking lot.\nTrail distance covered during the bird walk could vary significantly depending on how many birds we see. This program typically covers up to 1.2 miles on an unsurfaced trail.\nThe trail surface is largely flat with a few gentle inclines\, but can be uneven at points or contain tripping hazards such as exposed tree roots or rocks. The trail surface could be wet or muddy depending on recent weather.\n\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website so we can maintain group sizes that are conducive to birdwatching. This program is in high demand\, so please sign up for no more than two dates at one time to ensure that many people can enjoy the experience. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:DWELL: Poets Creating Conversation with WordxWord
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free\, outdoor poetry reading on the Dell stage behind the Stable. Bring your own chair or blanket. Not for the faint of heart\, WordXWord’s Poets Creating Conversation throws out a single word/idea and asks poets to respond. This month we’re asking poets to linger\, loiter\, or perhaps even reside in DWELL. \nWe long ago learned that there is no predicting how the outside world and/or which life experiences and challenges will insert themselves into the conversation. That’s the magic sauce that makes PCC work. For this event\, DWELL has the floor. Let’s see where it takes us. \n\nPre-registration is not required for this program.\nWordxWord is an outdoor program taking place on the Dell stage behind the Stable. In the event of severe inclement weather\, this program may be moved indoors. Updates (cancelling/rescheduling) will be available at WordXWordFestival.com prior to noon on the day of the event.\nWordXWord events are FREE and open to all; however\, some poems may contain content or language best suited for teens and adults. This event is outdoors and B.Y.O.C. – Bring Your Own Chair (or blanket to sit on).\nA golf cart will be available to assist attendees as needed.\n\nQuestions? Email: programs@edithwharton.org \n\nWordXWord uses spoken word\, poetry and storytelling in shared space and time to celebrate diversity and creativity\, empower the individual\, foster understanding and empathy\, and make real human connections. \n\nWhat accessibility accommodations does The Mount offer?
