Borrow a pair of binoculars or bring your own to potentially see chickadees and chipmunks stockpiling food\, woodpeckers excavating trees\, ducks gathering in the wetlands adjoining Laurel Lake\, and other signs of wildlife in the gardens\, forests and meadows around the mansion. Learn about the fascinating history of the Berkshires as you explore the past\, present and future of the beautiful trees on the property. \n\nMeet in the parking lot of The Mount near the Ticket Booth.\nThis program covers up to 1.2 miles of unsurfaced trail. The trail surface might be uneven or contain exposed tree roots and rocks. Recent weather might make the trail surface wet\, muddy\, or slippery.\nBring binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us. Bring trekking poles if you think you might need them.\nNo public restrooms are available at The Mount at this time of year\, so plan your trip accordingly.\nYour guide will email you about 24 hours in advance of your program with any updates about your program\, such as trail conditions.\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website.\n\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Embark on a reflective journey through the woods\, meadows\, and grounds of Edith Wharton’s estate. Join Nancy\, an experienced trail guide\, as she leads us In the Footsteps of Edith. Each mindful walk will begin with reading a brief passage of Wharton’s writing—a poem\, letter\, or excerpt from a work of fiction—to enhance your connection to nature and frame an intention for the experience. At the conclusion of the journey\, participants are welcome to share reflections.  \nNancy Seguin is a lifelong volunteer and passionate explorer of nature\, history\, and cultural venues. An experienced Hiking Guide\, she enjoys creating fun and mindful learning experiences while bringing communities together in a scenic setting.   Nancy is a member of various local outdoor recreation and conservation organizations appreciating an active lifestyle of walking/hiking\, biking\, and qigong with others of shared interest.  Previously\, she was a Trail Steward for North County Land Trust and led group hikes for Berkshire Camino.  She’s hoping to meet you on the trails soon!  \n\nThis is a free program but capacity is limited! Join today.\n\n– This 90-minute hike takes place rain-or-shine on the trails of The Mount and adjacent properties. Please plan accordingly! DESCRIPTION:A collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum! \n\n\n\nThe Mount is partnering with the Norman Rockwell Museum to present three staged readings in the spirit of Wharton on Wednesday. This exciting series\, Readings at Rockwell | The Jazz Age Novel\, was organized in tandem with Jazz Age Illustration\, a major exhibition exploring the art of popular illustration of the 1920s and 1930s. The Jazz Age Novel series will explore the work of three authors who critically examine the enormous cultural shifts that took place in America in the 1920s\, including: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby (1925) on the 100th anniversary of its publication; Edith Wharton’s Glimpses of the Moon (1922) chronicling the lives of American expatriates in Europe; and Nella Larsen’s Passing (1929) delving into the complexity of racial identity during the Harlem Renaissance. \n\n\n\nEach program will begin with a short talk about the author and the featured novel\, followed by a dramatic reading of select passages by an actor or actors.  \n\nABOUT THIS PROGRAM: \nThe Great Gatsby\, by F. She has a BA in Medieval Studies from Wesleyan University and works for the sculptor George Rickey. Her most recent play\, Madame Mozart\, the Lacrimosa premiered at Great Barrington Public Theater in July of this year and had a second production at Punctuate4/Gloucester Stage in October. \n  \nRYAN WINKLES is an actor\, fight choreographer\, and teacher based in Western Massachusetts. He has been company member of Shakespeare & Company since 2006 and while there has performed in Shakespeare’s plays The Taming of the Shrew\, Antony and Cleopatra\, As You Like It\, Henry V\, Julius Caesar\, Love’s Labour’s Lost\, Macbeth\, Merry Wives of Windsor\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, Othello\, Richard III\, The Tempest\, Twelfth Night\, Two Gentlemen of Verona\, and The Winter’s Tale. Additionally\, Ryan has performed there in many plays not by Shakespeare which include Hound of the Baskervilles\, Creditors\, The Learned Ladies\, and Mother Courage.  Regional credits include: Great Barrington Public Theater: Madame Mozart: The Lachrimosa\, The Stones\, Breakwater; WAM Theatre: ROE\, The Old Mezzo; Theater at Woodshill: Hamlet; Gloucester Stage: Mr. Fullerton: Between the Sheets; Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse: Visitors; Commonwealth Stage Company: The Winter’s Tale\, Universe Rushing Apart; the Huntington Theatre Company: Joy and Pandemic. Film/television credits include The Boston Strangler(Hulu) and Time Traveling Bong(Comedy Central). Ryan Is a proud member of Actors Equity and SAG and teaches Stage Violence at Boston University and The Hartt School.  \n  \nANNE MARGARET DANIEL is a writer and editor who teaches literature and humanities at the New School University. She has written on topics from Oscar Wilde’s trials to F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Bob Dylan and contemporary music. Her edition of Fitzgerald’s previously unpublished short stories I’d Die for You and Other Lost Stories was published by Scribner in 2017; and her second edition of Tales of the Jazz Age for Oxford/World’s Classics in 2023. and the Norton Library edition of The Great Gatsby (2022). She is currently at work\, with Jackson L. Byer\, on an edition of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald’s selected letters; and on a book of essays about Bob Dylan. This year she served as conference director of The F. Scott Fitzgerald Society’s 17th international conference which celebrated the centennial year of the publication of The Great Gatsby.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Dive into the fascinating world of wildlife tracking with a beginner-friendly walk through fields and forests. Search for tracks\, scat\, and signs of the delicate but exciting interactions between predators and their prey. With any luck\, we will find signs of coyotes\, foxes\, deer\, rabbits\, and more. \n\nMeet in the parking lot of The Mount near the Ticket Booth.\nThis program covers up to one mile of trail depending on the amount of tracks we find. Terrain is level or gradually sloping. The trail surface could potentially be uneven or slippery due to snow\, mud or ice. Traction spikes or snowshoes may be available to borrow on a first-come\, first-served basis.\nDress for the weather and enjoy a morning of winter tracking.\nNo public restrooms are available at The Mount at this time of year\, so plan your trip accordingly.\nYour guide will email you about 24 hours in advance of your program with any updates about your program\, such as trail conditions.\nPre-registration is required through Mass Audubon’s website.\n\nQuestions? The special evening features selections from an exhilarating new operatic adaptation of Wharton’s iconic short story\, Roman Fever\, composed by Louis Karchin with a libretto by Joan Ross Sorkin. \nTransforming Wharton’s razor-sharp drama of friendship\, jealousy\, and betrayal into powerful operatic theater\, the work brings the story’s simmering tensions and dark secrets vividly to life. The event offers audiences a rare behind-the-scenes experience\, blending performance highlights with an intimate conversation moderated by Natalie Johnsonius Neubert\, President and CEO of Berkshire Opera Festival\, about the creative process of adapting literature for the stage. \nSoprano Kerrigan Bigelow will perform the role of Grace Ansley\, alongside soprano Sofia Scattarreggia as Alida Slade\, with pianist Luke Poeppel providing musical direction. Among his more than one hundred compositions are three operas and numerous works for chamber and solo combinations. Eleven portrait CDs are on Naxos\, Bridge\, New World\, and New Focus labels\, and recognition has come from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (three awards) and the Guggenheim Foundation\, among others. In 2000\, he was one of 53 composers chosen by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to represent New York City at the turn of the Millennium\, and in 2022\, the Eastman School of Music\, his undergraduate alma mater\, awarded him a Centennial Medal for lifetime achievement in music. Mr. Karchin was twice a Leonard Bernstein Fellow in Composition at Tanglewood\, where he was invited to return in 2011 to conduct his Chamber Symphony in Ozawa Hall. He is Professor of Music at New York University. \nJoan Ross Sorkin is an opera librettist\, musical bookwriter/lyricist\, and playwright. Bigelow has performed as Gretel in Juilliard’s production of Hänsel und Gretel\, Flora in The Turn of the Screw\, with the New Series in Pierrot Lunaire\, and at Merkin Hall as a winner of the Vocal Arts Honors Recital. They have appeared in a wide range of soprano roles\, including Blanche in Dialogues des Carmelites\, Florencia in Florencia en el Amazonas (Catán)\, among others. Most recently\, Dr. Scattarreggia covered the roles of Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and made debut with Annapolis Opera as Donna Anna in their fall production of Don Giovanni. Dr. Scattarreggia regularly performs challenging modern and post-tonal chamber and large-scale compositions. Upcoming projects include premiering Susan Kander’s opera Cary My Own Suitcase with Buffalo Opera Unlimited\, and workshopping Tobias Picker’s new opera Safe Haven with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.
