The memoir unfolds as a spiraling history\, tracing connections across time—a historic flood in 1950\, Cold War weather experiments\, betrayals of the Mohawk nation\, and Kurt Vonnegut. Ultimately\, Nightshining is an exploration of community and place as a palimpsest of history. \nCo-organized by Mass Audubon and moderated by Donovan Arthen\, Executive Director of Orion Magazine\, this conversation will delve into the relationship between ecology and experience\, exploring the ways that a new generation of nature writers are expanding our understanding of the natural world and our place within it.  \nVanessa Chakour\, author\, naturalist\, and former pro boxer\, fosters intimacy with inner and outer wilds through writing\, herbalism\, martial arts\, and land stewardship. Poet Ama Codjoe will provide an introduction.  \n\nCarl Phillips’s latest book of poems is Scattered Snows\, to the North (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, 2024). His Then the War: And Selected Poems 2007-2020 (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, 2022) won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize. Other honors include the Jackson Poetry Prize\, the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award\, the Los Angeles Times Book Award\, the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry\, and awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the Academy of American Poets\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the Library of Congress. Bring your lawn chair and binoculars and enjoy an evening with the birds. \n\nMeet in front of the entrance to Edith Wharton Park\, which is located on Laurel Lake Road in Lenox\, MA. Park on the dirt shoulder\, where the guide will be visible in a blue uniform at the park entrance. For directions and more information\, visit this webpage.\nThis program covers less than 0.3 miles and is largely stationary\, so bringing a lawn chair is recommended. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us. Dress for the forecasted weather.\nBug spray is recommended.
