DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the ancient Chinese\, mind-body practice of Qigong\, meaning “mastery of your life-force energy.” Qigong\, a simpler form of Tai Chi\, combines gentle movements that mimic nature\, self-applied massage\, breathwork\, and meditation with the goal of improving and maintaining physical and emotional health. This self-care practice has been found to relieve stress and anxiety\, calm the mind\, and may help reduce pain\, improve mobility\, balance\, posture\, strength\, immunity and sleep.  \nTo register for this class\, email Jamie: greene01238@gmail.com \n\nThis program takes place beside the French Flower Garden or at the Dell behind the Stable. Check in with the Ticket booth to confirm the location for each class.\nWear comfortable shoes or bring a mat and practice barefoot. Eileen Mahoney\, expressive arts therapist\, writer\, and Buddhist practitioner in the Plum Village tradition\, for a writing workshop blending the wisdom of nature with the power of words. This half-day program explores what it means to be rooted\, especially in these chaotic times. As we move more deeply into autumn and are cradled in the sanctuary of The Mount’s trees\, we will enjoy guided meditation\, poetry\, writing\, and sharing our work. Come prepared to relax\, enjoy\, and reflect on what the trees have to teach us with their solid roots and glorious\, colored leaves. \nRev. Eileen Mahoney is an Interfaith Interspiritual minister who offers workshops and counseling regionally and internationally. She is ordained in Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Engaged Buddhism and an initiate of the Sufi Order Inayatiaya. She is also a Certified Trauma Informed Expressive Arts Therapist and Mindfulness Teacher. Eileen’s forthcoming book\, Viriditas\, the Greening of the Soul\, outlines a process combining meditation and the arts with spiritual exploration to refresh and enliven our souls in the face of today’s challenges. She has been a member of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox since 1991\, where she has played numerous lead roles in both Shakespearean and contemporary plays\, directed several readings and one full production\, and taught and directed in the actor training programs. DESCRIPTION:Join us this Halloween for a ghostly talk and tour of The Mount with author Robert Oakes! \nAfter reading her first ghost story\, Edith Wharton was plunged into “a world haunted by formless horrors\,” and felt that a “dark undefinable menace forever dogging [her] steps\, lurking and threatening.” Some mysterious magic contained in this particular kind of tale\, when mingled with Wharton’s own “intense Celtic sense of the supernatural\,” seemed to produce such a fearful effect on the young author that\, for years after reading her first ghostly tale\, she “could not sleep in the room with a book containing a ghost story” and “had to burn books of this kind\, because it frightened [her] to know that they were downstairs in the library!”  \nAnd yet\, amazingly\, Wharton went on to write ghost stories of her own. Indeed\, she became a master of the form\, taking her place among the great ghost story writers who inspired her\, like Sheridan Le Fanu\, Marion Crawford\, and Fitz-James O’Brien. As Wharton wrote her ghostly tales\, she thought about what made these stories work\, how it was that they could affect us so deeply as to send “a cold shiver down one’s spine…” \nThough we know it’s just a story\, right? \nJoin Robert Oakes\, author of Ghosts of the Berkshires and long-time ghost tour guide at The Mount\, as he explores Wharton’s ideas on ghosts and ghost stories and shares excerpts from her tales that reveal some of their mysterious magic. Following the talk in The Mount’s Drawing Room\, we’ll bring the tales to life as we explore the Main House by flashlight and hear reports of hauntings at the estate. Wharton invited her readers to meet her “halfway among the primeval shadows.” In this program\, we’ll look into the darkness and see what we may see! \n \nRobert Oakes writes books about ghosts\, leads tours in haunted places\, and sings soulful original songs. He has written three books\, The Ghostly Tales of the Berkshires (2023)\, Ghosts of Northwestern New Jersey (2022)\, and Ghosts of the Berkshires (2020)\, all published by Arcadia Publishing. He has also released numerous recordings\, both as a solo artist and as part of the folk duo Oakes and Smith. Since 2010\, Robert has led immersive ghost storytelling experiences at historic locations in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts\, including Ventfort Hall\, Edith Wharton’s The Mount\, and Herman Melville’s Arrowhead. He has also given talks and readings for both children and adults at many libraries\, schools\, and cultural centers. Robert has appeared on Syfy’s Ghost Hunters\, Jeff Belanger’s New England Legends series on PBS\, and The Apple Seed show on BYUradio and has been featured in The Boston Globe\, The Berkshire Eagle\, and numerous other media outlets. DESCRIPTION:Join experienced outdoor guide and certified Tai Chi instructor\, Mary Hannah Parkman\, for a guided trail walk and forest bathing experience with simple to follow standing Tai Chi warmups and movements from the 8 Treasures of Tai Chi. These practices calm and reset the nervous system\, bring balance to the body\, and help cultivate peace in the present moment.\nTai Chi\, a Chinese martial art\, was inspired by nature and designed to enliven “chi” or life force energy for greater health and vitality.\n\n\n\n\nPre-registration by email is encouraged: maryhannah.parkman@gmail.com\nPark in the main Upper Parking Lot. Meet by the Ticket booth.\nWalk length approximately 0.5 miles. Mostly level or gently sloping trail.\nDress for the weather in comfortable clothes suitable for movement.\nIf it is raining\, this outdoor experience will be abbreviated to one hour.\n\nSuggested donation: $20 per person. \nCash or Venmo @maryhannah-parkman (code: 0285) \n5% of donations will go to support hemlock tree conservation efforts at the New York State Hemlock Initiative \n\nMary Hannah Parkman\, is a certified Tai Chi Instructor and Yoga Teacher. Mary Hannah was drawn to Tai Chi by the nature-inspired movements and the dance between grace and strength. After practicing Tai Chi and Qi Gong for 10 years\, she earned her first Tai Chi certification in 2023. When Mary Hannah teaches Tai Chi\, she draws on her 12 years of experience as a mind-body movement instructor\, teaching yoga in studios\, wellness resorts\, public schools\, summer camps and leading mindful outdoor experiences.
