SUMMARY:Words in the Wild: Nature Writing Now with Vanessa Chakour & Jennifer Kabat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting discussion on contemporary nature writing featuring authors Vanessa Chakour and Jennifer Kabat\, whose recently published books explore provocative new ideas on the changing state of the natural world through the lens of their memoirs.  \nDrawing on the field of animal behavior\, Chakour’s Earthly Bodies (Penguin Life\, 2024) connects human struggles to the predicaments of twenty-three species of wild animals—from wolves to sea lions—raising questions about our humanity as a way to understand how we might benefit from embracing our own animal nature to gain deeper self-actualization\, find common ground with our fellow animals\, and learn to thrive together. Following up on The Eighth Moon (2024)\, Nightshining: A Memoir in Four Floods (Milkweed Editions\, 2025) follows Kabat through a flood that occurred during her first year living in Margaretville\, New York. The memoir unfolds as a spiraling history\, tracing connections across time—a historic flood in 1950\, Cold War weather experiments\, betrayals of the Mohawk nation\, and Kurt Vonnegut. Ultimately\, Nightshining is an exploration of community and place as a palimpsest of history. \nCo-organized by Mass Audubon and moderated by Donovan Arthen\, Executive Director of Orion Magazine\, this conversation will delve into the relationship between ecology and experience\, exploring the ways that a new generation of nature writers are expanding our understanding of the natural world and our place within it.  \nVanessa Chakour\, author\, naturalist\, and former pro boxer\, fosters intimacy with inner and outer wilds through writing\, herbalism\, martial arts\, and land stewardship. Drawing on her vast personal experiences over two decades\, she curates retreats and courses\, inspiring creative expression through writing and movement workshops\, and fostering intimacy with nature through an understanding of the plants\, fungi\, and animals who share our ecosystems. Vanessa facilitated experiences in partnership with organizations like the Wolf Conservation Center and the Jaguar Rescue Center and is a Project Coyote Ambassador. She is the author of Awakening Artemis\, a memoir told through the lens of 24 medicinal plants\, and Earthly Bodies: Embracing Animal Nature (2024)\, which delves into the parallels between human struggles and the experiences of our wild neighbors\, offering insights on self-discovery and coexistence. She lives in Massachusetts where she stewards her local ecosystem\, coaches boxing\, and is a devoted student of nature.  \nJennifer Kabat is the author of the twinned memoirs The Eighth Moon (2024) and Nightshining (2025) published by Milkweed Editions. She received an Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for her criticism and has been published in BOMB and The Best American Essays. Her writing has also appeared in Granta\, Frieze\, Harper’s\, McSweeney’s\, The Believer\, Virginia Quarterly Review\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, The New York Review\, and The White Review. A finalist for the essay prize at Notting Hill Editions\, she often collaborates with artists. She’s part of the core faculty in the Design Research MA at the School of Visual Arts. An apprentice herbalist\, she lives in rural New York and serves on her volunteer fire department.  \nDonovan Arthen\, Executive Director / Chief of Finance\, Operations\, People and Culture at Orion Magazine\, is a community builder\, management professional\, and musician who grew up in the foothills of the Berkshires. Living and working in the nonprofit world\, he found a professional passion for fostering operational and financial sustainability. He has his masters in Managing Mission Driven Organizations from Marlboro Professional and Graduate School\, where he focused on leadership development and creating positive productive working environments and culture. Donovan brings with him a wide range of experiences and perspectives from his time traveling and learning from different peoples and places all over the world.  \nPhotos: Enrique Rosado (Chakour); CJ Harvey (Kabat)\n\nThis event is FREE and open to the public!\nSeating is limited\, registration is recommended.\n \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nPlease consider supporting this and other free programs at The Mount with a donation or Membership. SUMMARY:Building Old New York | Sara Cedar Miller\, Before Central Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating series of talks delving into the history and legacy of some of New York City’s most iconic institutions\, spaces\, and landmarks. From the architecture of the Gilded Age to the preservation of historic neighborhoods in the twentieth century\, this series invites art and architectural historians to present the stories behind New York’s distinctive urban and cultural landscape\, highlighting the vision\, innovation\, and determination that built Old New York.  \nOn August 20\, historian Sara Cedar Miller presents Before Central Park (Columbia University Press\, 2022)\, the authoritative account of the place that would become Central Park. With more than eight hundred sprawling green acres in the middle of one of the world’s densest cities\, Central Park is an urban masterpiece. Designed in the middle of the nineteenth century by the landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux\, it is a model for city parks worldwide. But before it became Central Park\, the land was the site of farms\, businesses\, churches\, wars\, and burial grounds―and home to many different kinds of New Yorkers. Join us for an illustrated talk with Sara Cedar Miller\, historian emerita of the Central Park Conservancy and author of Before Central Park\, the authoritative account of the place that would become Central Park. From the first Dutch family to settle on the land through the political crusade to create America’s first major urban park\, Miller chronicles two and a half centuries of history. For this special presentation at The Mount\, Miller will delve into the formative connections between Central Park and Edith Wharton\, whose ancestors owned a parcel of farmland that would become part of the Park.  \nA complimentary wine and cheese reception will follow this event to celebrate the conclusion of the Building Old New York series. Join us! \nSara Cedar Miller is the historian emerita of the Central Park Conservancy\, which she first joined as a photographer in 1984. Her books include Central Park: An American Masterpiece (2003)\, Strawberry Fields: Central Park’s Memorial to John Lennon (2011)\, and Seeing Central Park: The Official Guide (updated and expanded edition\, 2020).  \nThis event is sponsored by Nedra and Richard Koplin\, who wish to thank all of those associated with The Mount as they continue to build its historic legacy. \n Photo: Hannah Mrakovčić\n\nThis program has reached full capacity. \nJoin the Waitlist!\n  \n$10 – Mount Members\n$15 – General Admission\nFree for Students \nInterested in becoming a Member? SUMMARY:Summer Author Series | Elyse Graham\, Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II
DESCRIPTION:Since 1993\, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. The eight-week series will highlight the stories of groundbreaking visionaries—scientists\, activists\, thought leaders\, and artists who have broken barriers and reshaped the world.  \nOn August 25 & 26\, author Elyse Graham presents Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II (Harper Collins\, 2024). At the start of WWII\, the U.S. found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency\, and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—a precursor to today’s CIA—was quickly formed. To fill its ranks with experts\, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly\, literature professors\, librarians\, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work. Drawing on personal histories\, letters\, and declassified OSS files\, historian Elyse Graham tells the story of this small group of academics-turned-OSS spies who invented modern spycraft\, and helped turn the tide of World War II. Book and Dagger is thrillingly paced and rigorously researched—an inspiring and gripping true story revealing the indelible power of the humanities to change the world.  \nElyse Graham is a historian and professor at Stony Brook University\, a flagship university in the SUNY system. She holds degrees from Princeton\, Yale\, and MIT\, and has learned how scholars whisper\, scheme\, launder information\, and guard secrets. SUMMARY:The Amy Clampitt Fund presents Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Join us to experience the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Phillips\, who will read from his latest poetry collection\, Scattered Snows\, to the North (Farrar\, Straus and Giroux\, 2024)\, a collection about distortion and revelation\, about knowing and the unreliability of a knowing that’s based on human memory. \nThis reading is presented by the Amy Clampitt Fund\, a Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation\, that seeks to advance poetry and the literary arts. Poet Ama Codjoe will provide an introduction.  \n\nCarl Phillips’s latest book of poems is Scattered Snows\, to the North (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, 2024). His Then the War: And Selected Poems 2007-2020 (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, 2022) won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize. Other honors include the Jackson Poetry Prize\, the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award\, the Los Angeles Times Book Award\, the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry\, and awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the Academy of American Poets\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the Library of Congress. Phillips has also written three prose books\, most recently My Trade Is Mystery: Seven Meditations from a Life in Writing (Yale University Press\, 2022). He lives on Cape Cod\, in Massachusetts.  \nPhoto: Reston Allen\nAmy Clampitt\, born in New Providence\, Iowa\, emerged as one of America’s most celebrated poets later in life\, following careers in publishing and environmental work. Educated at Grinnell College\, Columbia University\, and the New School\, she turned seriously to poetry in the 1960s\, achieving widespread acclaim with the publication of The Kingfisher in 1983. Her richly textured\, allusion-laden verse—praised for its baroque vocabulary\, intricate syntax\, and sensuous imagery—drew comparisons to literary giants like Emily Dickinson\, Wallace Stevens\, and Marianne Moore. Critics highlighted her virtuoso command of language and her ability to weave metaphor with musicality and wit. Clampitt’s notable collections include What the Light Was Like (1985)\, Archaic Figure (1987)\, and A Silence Opens (1994). A recipient of prestigious fellowships and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, she also taught at institutions such as Amherst and Smith Colleges. She died in Lenox\, Massachusetts\, in 1994\, leaving behind a body of work both intellectually dazzling and emotionally resonant. \n\nTickets to this event are free\, registration is required! \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nInterested in becoming a Mount Member?
