Fighting France begins with the outbreak of World War I and describes how mobilization transformed France and the French. From there, it describes a series of trips Wharton took to the Front, a place few other women were allowed to go.
It is also an unusual travel book. Instead of visiting the ruins of the past, the book is dominated by the ruins of the present.
