Since 1993, the Summer Author Series has brought award-winning authors to The Mount. This year’s theme is trailblazers. The eight-week series will highlight the stories of groundbreaking visionaries—scientists, activists, thought leaders, and artists who have broken barriers and reshaped the world.
On August 25 & 26, author Elyse Graham presents Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II (Harper Collins, 2024). At the start of WWII, the U.S. found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency, and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—a precursor to today’s CIA—was quickly formed. To fill its ranks with experts, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly, literature professors, librarians, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work. Drawing on personal histories, letters, and declassified OSS files, historian Elyse Graham tells the story of this small group of academics-turned-OSS spies who invented modern spycraft, and helped turn the tide of World War II. Book and Dagger is thrillingly paced and rigorously researched—an inspiring and gripping true story revealing the indelible power of the humanities to change the world.
Elyse Graham is a historian and professor at Stony Brook University, a flagship university in the SUNY system. She holds degrees from Princeton, Yale, and MIT, and has learned how scholars whisper, scheme, launder information, and guard secrets. She is the author of three academic books: You Talkin’ to Me? (2020), A Unified Theory of Cats on the Internet (2020), and The Republic of Games (2018).

Individual Rain or Shine Tickets guarantee admission to a program regardless of weather conditions. For a modest increase in the ticket cost, you are guaranteed a seat at events that need to be moved indoors to The Mount’s Stable Auditorium. General Admission tickets are available for each event as well; however, in the event of inclement weather — excessive heat or severe thunderstorms — you are not guaranteed a seat. General Admission tickets will be canceled and refunded if weather conditions prohibit us from hosting an event outside.

- This one-hour talk takes place in The Mount’s Event Tent, an open-air, two-pole tent adjacent to the parking lot. Please be mindful of the weather and plan accordingly!
- In the event of extreme weather — excessive heat or severe thunderstorms — In Conversation talks may be moved indoors to The Mount’s Stable Auditorium. *New to 2025* The Mount is offering Rain or Shine Tickets, which guarantee admission to this program regardless of location! Those with standard admission tickets will have their orders automatically canceled and receive full refunds within seven business days.
